False "there is not enough space in system storage"

Post » Thu Jan 14, 2016 5:50 pm

Heya

So here's my problem - after 3 days and 18 hours worth of gameplay I've ran into trouble saving. Every time I manually save I get the following error message:

"there is not enough space in system storage.

to continue using the application, you must free up 10.65 MB more space.

to free up more space in system storage without closing system storage without closing the application, delete applications on the home screen, or delete video clips and screenshots in [capture gallery]."

Now here's what makes the message bizarre; I have just over 400GB of space left in system storage, as Fallout 4, it's saves, and the screenshots automatically taken when I get a trophy are the only things that are on the PS4. Regardless, when I first got this I went and deleted 2 quick saves I had, as well as the save I had left from when I first left vault 111, only leaving the last time I manually saved (2 levels and some awesome seriously awesome loot ago) and three auto-saves. This message did not change (including the amount of space it was asking me to delete). I have also tried turning the console off, as this first happened last night. In another bizarre twist, it seems as if the auto-saves were relatively recent, but this whole situation makes me wary of continuing to play until I can fix it.

The only thing I can think of that may be causing the issue is if, when the game states that my save file is save 157, it is stating that there is 157 save files. Bare in mind that every time I have manually saved I have done so over the same save file, and when I go to save/load there are only the four files I mentioned in the last paragraph. whether that is the issue or not system storage is reporting that I have plenty of space.

Doing some searching online, I've only found one post on the Sony forums reporting the issue, which has gone unanswered, and posts made by people who had a similar problem with downloading other games.

I'm also thinking of trying un-installing fallout and then re-installing it. If I did so would I lose my auto-saves and/or my other save file?

Thanks for reading, and hopefully I can get some help with this issue.

Hey there. Have you updated your game to the latest version (v1.2)?

Hey, if you're a PlayStation plus member upload all your save files to online storage. Then delete the game entirely, reinstall it and redownload your save files from storage. This should work, if not it could be that one of your save files is corrupted, therefore every save file after that may not work properly. Before all that though, make sure you are connected online when playing the game, and I hope you have tried rebooting the PS4 before posting this. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunatley I do not have playstation plus, though if I wanted to move my files off, as I understand it, I could use a memory stick. I'll try it out a bit later and make an update.

And ofcourse, I have tried the ol' reboot.

No, because saves are located in a different folder than game installations.

-------------

How many saves do you have?

Copy your saves on a external USB device but not the autosaves.

Then delete all your saves for that particular game on your PS4

--------

Go here: https://support.us.playstation.com/articles/en_US/KC_Article/Safe-Mode-PS4/

and make option 5.

After that, put your last save back into your saves folder and try to load that. If it works, copy over your remaining save files to your console.

-----------

If the above doesn't work, try a system restore. However if you do that, you will lose everyhting that's on your PS4.

It's like having a new PS4 out of the Box. So be aware of this... !!!

Thanks Mark for the suggestion, but after copying my data to a USB pendrive and deleting my old manual save the problem has been fixed and I am able to manually save again from the last autosave. I'm not sure that the copying was neccesary, though, possibly just deleting the old file.

If I run into the same problem again I'll come back to this thread, possibly try the above suggestions, and update it.

Glad to hear it's working fine, HJackson. If it happens again, check to see how much space Fallout 4 saves are taking up in the application save data management on the console. And let us know if you run into the problem again.

Unfortunately it appears the problems have returned already. I was originally satisfied as I was able to overwrite my save file 3 times while walking around in sanctuary, but after returning there after a short play session it appeared to have returned.

Just as with last time, autosaves were recent but I was getting the same error message when I try to write over my save. However, it appeared that this time I can save a new file.

In terms of what happened during the play session, I had fast travelled to Sunshine Tidings Co-op, walked around the over world for a while exploring, fast travelled to Outpost Zimonja to defend the settlement, fast travelled back to Fort Hagen Satellite Array, walked to Boston Mayoral Shelter and went inside, fast travelled to Sommerville Place to defend the settlement, and then fast travelled back to Sanctuary. It is only after returning to Sanctuary that I tried to overwrite my save.

The last save before it stopped me from overwriting took up 10.65MB, the new save file takes up 10.75MB, with the recent autosaves taking up the same space. I decided to delete one of my autosaves and found myself able to overwrite the old save again, though the picture of the save remained the same rather than changing to be a screenshot of where I currently am. Furthermore, this savefile also bloated a bit to 10.79MB just from that overwrite, leaving it .04MB larger than the new save that was made in the exact same spot.

System storage reports that I still have 408.3GB of space left on the console, and in application save data it states Fallout 4 takes up 64.03MB, being spread between controls, settings, autosaves 1 and 2, and saves 5 and 6.

Little advice from my side: Don't ovewrite your save(s) over and over again. They can corrupt easily...

Yes as Mark said, make new ones and delete old ones if possible. I hope you can find a fix, but maybe, for some reason, old games, or files that were previously deleted are still taking space without being able to see it. Worse case, I'd imagine keeping your save files and doing a system restore should definitely fix the problem. I had a similar issue with Skyrim on PS3, but my game would freeze because of the save files cache had gotten too big, the fix was to delete ALL previous game data with only saves existing, then reinstalling the game lead to my save files taking wayyyyy less space. It seems as the more you explore, the more memory save files take, and if you are a completionist, as I am, save files will eventually become too cumbersome, and need a restore. Idk if that would happen with a PS4, but it sure did with its previous generation.
