FANTASTIC 3D implementation! Well done Crytek!

Wow. I mean. Just Wow.

Call 3D "gimmicky" all you want (now let's count the posts with the word "gimmicky" in them ), but Crytek has absolutely NAILED 3D implementation. And not in obvious, useless, "things popping off the screen way" but in leveraging 3D's immersive possibilities by using INTELLIGENT art direction similar, I believe, to how James Cameron used 3D in Avatar.... it got to the point where you forgot it normally DOESN'T look this good.

It is the subtle things; debris floating by your face in the wind, the way the HUD does not sit flat on the screen, but angles into the monitor, the way the Nano suit appears layered in your view, the way the sun reflects off the water of NY Harbor when you first emerge to the roof. Absolutely wonderful.

I'm running pretty old graphics hardware (a pair of 280GTX's) and the FPS is rock solid even in 3D. Bravo to Crytek for designing an engine from the ground up that is made to utilize 3D without killing framerates and without having to rely on the graphics driver (as an aside, I forgot to enable SLI, so played the first ten minutes on the highest graphics setting only running on 280GTX. Framerate was flawless).

I guess I should be angry there is no DX11 support yet (even though my 280's can't use it), and maybe I don't have the same critical eye that some of the "leet" gamers supposedly have, but the visuals are absolutely beautiful IMHO.

If this game were on display in stores running 3D Vision with a good PC rig, I'm confident it would sell units just like Visicalc sold Apple ]['s back in the day.

Now I pray that devs license this tech and make more games with it.

Hmm,

I'm not sure what's going on here but maybe you can help me.

I have a 3D capable TV as well as a 3D capable graphics card. However, the 3D options in-game are greyed out and I can't access anything. Am I missing something here? :S

Thanks,
Zurom

What graphics card are you running?

Since you are using a TV, are you running Nvidia's 3DTV Play?

I run on a 3D Monitor.... not a TV... so I'm not sure how much I can help but I'll try.

Can anyone tell me what (exactly) I need to play in 3D? also, how do I know that my GPU is 3D-capable?

The 3D options button is blacked out for me. Running Dual 5670 ATI cards.

Yes Bro it only works on nvidia, and you need a 3d capable screen with nvidia glasses

I don't believe this is correct. The newer ATI Radeon cards (Series 5000 and higher) WILL do 3D.... but I believe you need drivers from either Tridef or iZ3D.

Check out this link which explains what you need for ATI Stereo 3D:
http://www.amd.com/us/products/technologies/amd-hd3d/Pages/supported-hardware.aspx

I can't speak for how well it works because I use an Nvidia setup. But I believe it is worth trying out if you already have the video card and a 3DTV. All you need are the correct drivers.

I think you'll find the 3D experience WELL worth it.

EDIT: Check out this link as well. From one of my favorite 3D resources website:

I gave it a shot and it works! It seems a bit sluggish right now, so I'll have to do some fine tuning

Excellent! I'll be curious to hear your results. I'm running 1920x1080 on Extreme settings and average in the high-40's so far. I know that the Nvidia drivers do not do the rendering for Crysis 2 because the game engine itself does it.

I assume it is the same for ATI. Which drivers did you try? Apparently you can try both the Tridef and iZ3d drivers for free for a couple of weeks to see which one works better. But for only $25 or $40 bucks, seems a no-brainer if you already have the 3DTV and glasses.

Good luck!

I just want to add that, yes, the 3D is amazing in this game. Running it on Nvidia hardware myself - good luck ATI people!

I'd much rather see 3D become a method for expanding the elements back away from me. Make it a window (like Pixar does), not throw it in my face.

Yes. I agree. And I feel that is what Crytek has done.

And maybe it is the 3D.... but I think the game looks AMAZING. I've read some of the threads with people complaining about lack of DX11 support. But I honestly can't imagine this game looking better than it currently does in 3D. I'd GLADLY trade DX11 support if every game dev used this engine and 3D to this effect.

That being said, I'll be excited what DX11 *does* bring to the table.

In the meantime, I am absolutely THRILLED that I don't need to update my graphics system to play. I had been weighing upgrading to 580's figuring that this game would run like crap on my system in 3D.

However, I never fall below mid-40's FPS and am usually in the high 50's. This is at 1920x1080 in 3D running in SLI on 280GTX's.

I might stick it out to see the Kepler series and skip Fermi entirely at this point.
