Fantasy Story Premise

Post » Tue Oct 16, 2012 12:33 pm

Sorry but after Dagger's thread, my curiosity kicked in.

What would you guys think of a classic story twisted into something a bit different. I've had the idea of the Knight off to slay the Dragon for some time...

Except it's set in a rather dark, grim barely fantastical fantasy world. It's a bit of a stretch but think The Hobbit meets The Road with a bit of ASOIAF and Heart of Darkness thrown in. It's really quite simple - a bastard wandering knight wins the kings favor after a tournament. After being offered a near suicidal quest to kill one of the last remaining dragons far off in the mountains... our hero declines. But being the alcoholic [censored] mongerer he is he has an epiphany and accepts after some thought on how worthless he is. The following journey of pestilence and war, dark creatures and men gone savage is a harrowing one. And the closer to the Dragon he gets, the worse things are.

That's the basic idea... But I want to know yours guys honest opinions... Cliche, boring... I've wanted to take a crack at writing fantasy for years and this is a premise I'm most drawn to.

So thoughts? What are you guys drawn to when it comes to fantasy, would you read this? Alright peace.

Haha, this is like those threads with suggestions for games.

Anyways, I think your story could be cool, fi it was done right. If you are able to set the mood and make the reader get into a sort of dark and gloomy mood when reading, it could be awesome.
If you sort of point throughout the whole story that the dragon is the goal and the purpose of the story, but at the same time throw so much awesome crap at the protoganist, you might even get the reader to forget. Promote it as a classical work of fantasy, and before the reader knows it, turn it into something hideous.

I'd love it.

Anything can be a story, you have to work on it. This one does have some potential. At first I lol'ed, but then I considered it for real. I'm not saying its an epic award winner but it shows some promise over every other [censored] suggestion for the genre. As a basic rough draft like you woke up after a dream and scribbled your notes down? I would give it a 7/10 for its rambly musings. You took a tried ad generic concept added a minor spin to it and presented it well. About the minimum an idea can go to be average to okay.

As an actual book? I dunno 0/10? It looks like a half baked idea. So get baking or get out.

Well yes bare bones would be I sat down and thought typical fantasy setting = bright happy. I wanted to try the knight in shining armor and rip him down to realism, think darkest of the dark ages, with very little fantasy elements, the dragon and a few far and between monsters aside, perhaps a little nod to witchcraft and blood magic here or there.

But the arching point is more or less just how ugly humanity is, but how it's also redeemable. Cliche, yes, tried and true, also yes.

Full blown novel? No... not yet at least. More of a drawn out short story.

Then get writing. I think a novella would work much better than a full blown novel for the story. Allows for some depth without making it too dense. It also all comes down to how well you can write it, some of the most most cliche stories we love because how they were presented. An idea is only an idea.

Take that seed, plant it, and see how it grows!
I like the idea - the alcoholic knight in far-from-shining armor. Taking that classic idea of a quest and throwing someone unexpected into the hero's shoes. That idea really gives you a chance to develop your character and lift him (or her) from the page.

In short, I think the idea has a lot of potential. Now it's up to you :) From what you've written, I know I'll read it!

I've been watching videos of Shadow of the Colossus lately, and I was suprised at how the colossi themselves are not antagonised in any way. They're unique, and beautiful, and they look so sad lonely. And watching them die from a thousand pinpricks really does make you squirm. And guilt is a very strong emotion...

I don't remember reading anything about zombies.

Anyways, I say do it. If you keep the zombies out.
