Favorite Bethesda Game -Besides Skyrim

Post » Fri Oct 26, 2012 1:19 pm

It seems like i've read many posts with references to the Fallout series, especially when comparing TES with other games. I get the sense that Fallout New Vegas might be a really big fan favorite. But even though i knew Bethesda was behind Fallout, i didn't wanna try it because i didnt like the look and/or story behind it and/or weird targeting system where you aim for different body parts. --pardon me if any of this is innaccuate -as i explained i didnt play it.

To The Point Now: Based on my confidence with Bethesda as a whole and their work with TES, i am interested in looking for another GREAT Beth game and i was wondering what people thought. SPECIFICALLY a game that came out in the last few years. Obviously DOOM, which i stupidly didnt realize was a Beth game until 5 minutes ago, is a CLASSIC of all games ever made on this planet.

The closest i came to trying another TES-like game was The Hunted when i read great reviews about it in GameInformer. The auther was really impressed with it and i thought it looked really cool and dark, but i bought Skyrim instead and haven't stopped playing it since.

Are we talking games published by Bethesda, or just released by the in-house devs of Bethesda Game Studios?

'Cause, for example, New Vegas was better than Fallout 3 for me, but NV wasn't a BGS game, it was just published by Bethesda Softworks. And most recently, Dishonored was published by Beth but created by Arkane. And Doom was only published by Bethesda too, it was developed by id software.

Correct me if i am wrong but the Fallout series is the only other open-world rpg type game that Bethesda makes, that is why you are seening references and comparisons to it. Personally I loved the story of the games and enjoyed both Fallout 3 and NV alot. As far as the targeting system goes you dont actually have to use it if you don't want to, you can just free shoot.

The fallout games are worth giving a shot.

Fallout 3. If you get Fallout: New Vegas get the Ultimate Edition as it fixes some of the bugs with the game. I should point out that Beth did not make FO:NV, only provided the engine, some data etc...others can explain better than I.

A lot of people like Call of Cthulhu for original XBox and supported for 360. A bit dated but not a bad game.

Edit: Ninja'd!

Fallout: New Vegas was only published by Bethesda they had little to do with making. It's a fantastic game and a deeply immersing one at that. You'll be surprised by the amount of ways you can do things, as well as how great the writing is. Fallout 3 will feel similar to Skyrim as it's a great hack 'n' slash explorer, but eh...kinda ruined Fallout lore and is pretty black and white. Other than that try Dishonored. It's pretty fun.

Fallout 3 is my second favorite game Bethesda has developed. Of all the Bethesda developed (or published) games I've played my favorites would run in this order:

1. Skyrim
2. New Vegas
3. Fallout 3
4. Morrowind
5. Oblivion
6. Daggerfall

Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, Rage... probably Doom 4. Anything else I either didn't like very much or haven't played. Dishonored was amazing (for what it HAD). But, IMO, falls on its face for what it's missing. IOW, it feels like a game that's half missing. Other titles with similar SP play lengths (like Brink) at least have MP to fall back on (which I don't care for anyway). I'm not even considering the newly announced Dishonored expansions.

This would go better in the community discussion, but I'll say either Morrowind or Fallout 3.

Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion are the only Bethesda games I really like.

Fallout 3, like Skyrim, is just okay. F:NV (developed by Obsidian) is a better game in my opinion. I also hear Fallout 1 and 2 are even better, though I haven't got round to playing them yet...

Fallout New Vegas even if game was only published by bethesda still in my mind consider it to be bethesda game
I even think Fallout NV gives you better RPG experience than Skyrim bc your action actually impact the people perception of you in world plus the hard core mode makes it much more real and interesting

and thats coming from huge skyrim fan

Thanks for the great feedback. And yes PooHunter, this would be better for community discussion but i didnt realize that when i was figuring out where to post this. And thank you everyone else for clarifying how and when Bethesda puts their label on a game. I don't know anything about that. I just realized Doom was an option for the forums. Now that you bring that up, i should have said Bethesda DEVELOPED games and not just published. I think that makes more sense when ranking favorites because when Beth develops a game more of their heart, soul and ingenuity is behind it, right?

From Bethesda themselves, I've played Oblivion, Fo3 and Skyrim and I have to say Fo3 takes the throne for me.

In my order- Fallout 3 >Oblivion >>>... >>> Skyrim.

Favorite Beth developed game is still probably Morrowind(>Skyrim>Fallout 3>Oblivion). Admittedly some nostalgia probably factoring in, but Morrowind had the best story, most imaginative game world, and most interesting antagonist. It also had the least intrusive main quest, even though it's the main quest I enjoyed the most.
