Favorite DOOM Creature?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:35 am

I think one of my favorite things about DOOM is the monsters. They just strike fear into me whenever I see one, personally my favorite is the Demon. I skip a heart beat whenever I hear or see one, the only thing I can think of that's worse is the Spectre. But I like the demon more because I can see Adrian Carmack's awesome art and not some apparition.

(Please note this is only for DOOM or Ultimate DOOM creatures. Not Doom II. Although those guys are awesome too.)

ToJKa was eaten by a Spectre. (As ZDoom puts it :D)

However Cyberdemon gets my vote, big ugly and deadly. Cyberden (plutonia map 31) is one of my favorites, and Eternal Doom has some maps with 5 of them. At the same time :bolt:

It was quite impressive in Doom 3 too, however the fight,
Spoiler
relying solely on the Soul Cube
was not.

Cyberdemons are great too. I remember the first time I saw it in Shores Of Hell. Yikes...... :unsure2:

Doom 3 was just unimpressive all around to me. I was just sad that they were going for survival horror and not a great FPS like Doom 1 and 2. Plus not to mention that Doom and Doom II scared me much more frequently just in an hour then all of my playtime on Doom 3. Hopefully id's design teams do better on Doom 4.

I voted Imp... but I don't think I like Imps any more than I like Demons or Spectres... idSoftware simply had the greatest designs in all of video games.

I personally disagree on Doom3 having dropped that, as I loved seeing more believable monsters with abstract deadly appearances, rather than seeing floating tomatoes with horns, or the fantasy style of the Baron of Hell. What Doom3 did was make the monsters match the theme of the game, which is science fiction. My opinion on scaryness is that the classic ones aren't scary at all, the Doom3 ones are. When I myself first played Doom I loved the designs because they were funny, and cartoony, and kickass, but not scary.

But it's just an opinion, and I only mean that for Doom3. I love ALL the original Doom monster designs, and I wish they would just re-release classic Doom with 3d models and nice textures, then maybe even make a sequell to Doom2.

The classic Doom is, and always will be, the best :D

There is a sourceport called Doomsday Engine that has particle effects, high-resolution textures, and 3d model (of about Quake 2 quality) of every weapon, monster and item. No clue if that still floats around the net, but might worth investigating.

I was really disappointed that Arachnotrons didn't make it to Doom3 (especially after seeing the concept art). Those new spider monsters of Doom 3 did do their job of scaring the [censored] out of me excellently, though (and i'm not even arachnophobic) :hehe:

I think the scary thing was not that they looked scary, but I always played on super hard settings like Nightmare. So whenever I saw a demon I would start to panic because it's just another chance to die. I think one of the things Doom III missed was that old school game challenge like the first two.

Doom 3 is still a great game, no doubt about that. But I guess I just like the first two more. I know the levels in those games like the back of my hand.

I'll have to look into that :shifty:

Baron of Hell is by far my favorite. When I was a kid, I just felt so unprepared when I fought him. My tactic was just to rush him with a chainsaw and hope the other didn't come from behind.

I was disappointed in DOOM 2 when they changed the color of the sprite to make a Hell Knight.

I pretty much agree in all that. I figure that in Doom3 when the player worried was when 1 monster was dong some good damage. In classic Doom you worry when you see waves of Demons and Imps coming at you, and those cacodemons.

BTW, Doomsday isn't bad, but the best source for good looking 3d is Risen3D. It's because it was made especially for the 3d, so they don't focus on other stuff. Downsides? Sure, it doesn't have multiplayer.

Cacodemon

If Doom 2 monsters were addded to the poll, id go with the Arch-vile.

I like the hellknight even if it's a repaint. :P

As for Risen 3d it is a branch off of the http://dengine.net/. I haven't used http://risen3d.drdteam.org/ in years but still use Doomsday but my main port of use these days is http://www.osnanet.de/c.oelckers/gzdoom/index.html. It's debatable what port is better looking and the thing is, there's cool maps you'll miss out on if you only use one. ;)

I personally think the Barons of Hell are the best - they're big, bulky and they look like the guards of Hell we supposedly stereotype them for. OK, so they're not entirely Cyber/Spiderdemons but they're pretty good at dealing and taking damage.

I can imagine the expressions on their faces when Dante walked with Virgil through the Inferno - "Damn, look at that man with that laurel, and his red robes! He looks so.... so.... so HOLY! I just wanna go out there and !"

So yeah, I think the Barons of Hell are awesome, and really suit DOOM as a murderous, almost-impossible enemy! ^_^

Shotgun Guys, because they're one of the stronger enemies in the game (hitscan weapons with upwards of 20 damage on harder modes) and they give me delicious shotgun shells. I love hearing their death cries in unison.

...and as an added bonus they sometimes shoot other demons in the a$$ while trying to hit you. :D
