I feel so ignorant when I stumble upon threads like this  I don't have any favorite philosophers, I slept through my philosophy classes in highschool and passed the bac (the French diploma at the end of highschool) despite a pitiful 6/20 grade in philosophy (the question I chose to answer was something along the lines of "is there a point in wanting to escape the influence of time", or something like that). It's not that I didn't find philosophy interesting but it flew way above my head, maybe it was the teacher, maybe I wasn't smart enough. Either way, those who study philosophy have my deepest respect.

I don't really favor one philosopher over another at this point since I only know a handful of the old famous philosophers and hardly any modern ones, I'm too ignorant to form an opinion there. However I do have a favorite philosophy if you could call it that and it's one that I can't remember anyone else making but it would be a long shot to say that there have not been at least a million others who have made the same philosophy.

And what I consider to be the greatest concept imaginable is that if everyone treated others better than themselves then the world would be a fair and balanced world without such concepts such as "upper class" and "lower class", only equals. Which is why I think it's good to strive to do more to aid others than to aid yourself. It's not something that truly works unless everyone does it, but if you follow that concept yourself you may inspire others to do the same :P

Some would point towards "necessary evils" I guess, like some of the medical breakthroughs we've had and some of the bigger projects we've had happening have been made possible by the powerful abusing the weak for progress or gain, but I think all that can be done can be done without "necessary evils", even if it would take longer in some cases.

I know what you mean. I'm just now taking Intro to Philosphy, and the only thing I've read so far is Socratic Wisdom by Plato. All I can say is that it reminds me a great deal of Jesus in the Bible, especially during his arrest & trial. Almost too familiar.

This is probably going to get locked sooner, rather than later, so to just add my two cents into the mix.

Sartre, Camus, Stuart-Mill, and Kant.

Yes we do, in a mature fashion that doesn't lock the thread if at all possible (if that's what you mean).

Persons: Zeno of Citium, The Dude, Edward Swallow.

Philosophies: Agnostic Theism, Libertarian, Primitivism to a certain extent. I guess Pseudo-Primitivism would be the best way to describe my beliefs. (NOT, I repeat, NOT Anarcho-Primitivism). I don't really feel like going into detail.

I'm actually taking Intro to Philosophy this semester. This is my first year in college.
Being an English major, can anyone tell me if I should take Logic 1 & 2 as my two Math courses? I'm not sure exactly what they entail, except that I heard they were related to Philosophy.
I don't know your system (as in, what two math courses should entail), but Logic 1 and 2 probably include propositional and predicate logic, which can be seen as the building blocks of reasoning. Definitely courses you'll want to do if you're interested in doing more philosophy courses. You'll also notice their influence in life a bit (especially when politicians are talking).

I am a athiest and I like liberalism. I don't think this topic is allowed by the way. We are kind of delving straight into religious and political views. I had to actually stop myself from attacking Daggerfallftw's fascist views. Some might not be so restrained.

Johnson, Burke, Dalrymple.

Ideology: in general, I think it's a bad idea to let your political ideas be guided by philosophers.

Thomas Aquinas, I disagree with most of what he says but I respect what he tried to do. The philosophy of the western world was an absolute mess at the time, Aquinas tried to use his reason to make sense of the world when nobody else was bothering.
My favourite ethical theory is Rule Utilatarianism

I've been waiting for someone to post a philosophical philosophy I'd be happy to piggyback onto. And there it is! Yay. :)

I find it hard to expand on my views in a moderated environment at this point in time, as one with views typically deemed not socially acceptable will quickly find. However, in an effort to at least give some form of explaination without drawing too much negative attention, I'll do my best. Obviously some things aren't going to be covered but that can't be helped.

To sum it up, I believe in a blend of Seperatism, positive and negative eugenics,
I cn see some logic, there, it would help eliminate hereditary disease.
State above self,
Social Darwinism,
Ok
union of State with religion & public life
That works out well, just look at the middle east.
, elaborate state-sponsored pagentry
What ?
emphasis on culture & myth
Myths have no importance, culture is fine.
, the benefits of regulated propaganda,
Propaganda has no benefits. Sure you can shape morals, but all it takes is one bad leader and its ruined.
and the elimination of diverse political entities.
Why ?

Again, this hardly scratches the surface, but let me assure you that I am not typically sympathetic to most people who claim some form of National Socialism. I have also not been "indoctrinated", as I make decisons for myself as anyone who knows me will tell you. I do not know a single person in my life who claims even half of my own beliefs and most of my friends are blatently against this philosophy.
I dont know what I would class myself as. But since you have been honest I will too. I am some sort of nationalist, I belive my country is superior to others, and I belive that we should keep those out. If they want to live like that in their country fine, but I dont think my country should be lowered by adopting inferior cultures.
I guess that makes me some branch of nationlist. Just a shame I am on the side with so many people I hate, and they mke everyone look bad.

I am also an uthoritiarian. I would rather have 1 leader with more power. You see politicians these days, and it looks childish. A leader with no arguments would be more efficient, preferabley a monarchy as they could be trained from birth to rule.

I belive in secular government, religion is illogical, making it a law would be extremely stupid. We would be stoning children for disobeying their parents, were that the case.

very appropriate for a topic on philosophy and ideologies

Yeah I'm currently in my first year of my Philosophy degree. I find Logic the most interesting, yet easiest module. It pretty much dissects arguments to show how an argument can be valid and/or sound. It's not very mathematical, it's more like complicated common sense. A bit like Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning put together, and discussing arguments. It's good fun.

As for my philosophical views.
I'm very right wing, with regards to everything: society, religion, economics.
I'm very focussed on Darwinism - though I know he's not really a 'philosopher'.
Survivial of the fittest added with a Satre-ist view of 'man is the measure of himself'.
I don't believe in intrinsic morality only laws based on what we need to survive as a species.
Naturally I follow a Dawkins like philosophy when it comes to Religion (I appreciate the forums restrictions, so I'll leave you to research that if you don't know what it means).
I do appreciate all the major philosophers, especially those before their time: Aristotle, Plato, Hobbes, Hume, Kant and most of the others that I've studied in detail. Though I don't think that it's ideal that we should live by Utilitarianistic principles, I reckon that most of us do anyway so kudos to Bentham and Mill for getting that down on paper, despite it's massive flaws.

I know my views are pretty strong, but I think I'm right, just like everyone else does. If you insist on wanting to disagree with me publicly, please PM me and don't get this thread banned. It's interesting to read what everyone thinks.

I noted that too.
To me that feels like saying a ball is optional when playing football.
Philosophy always is a debate, a reflection on or a reaction to something else (or itself to be more accurate).
