Private Practice is a ridiculous drama laden, soapy mess centered around a group of doctors running a "small town" type medical practice in L.A., I was getting read to throw in the towel towards the end of season three when they introduced Amelia Shepherd. A world class neruosurgeon who is just finding her place in the world. She's a former narcotics addict who gradually uses alcohol as a gateway drug before slipping back into pill abuse during seasons four and five.
I appreciated how realistically Shonda Rimes portrayed Amelia's turbulent descent into alcohol/pill abuse. AA and NA are typically so overly dramatized or egregiously misportrayed in shows that I was worried about her introduction. Luckily Rhimes did her homework and thanks to stellar acting on Caterina Scorsone's part she quickly became one of my favorite television characters.
Plus there's more to her than her sordid past/ (then) present abuse. She's very funny and offers the occasional deep insight into a case. But I'm done talking about some now-cancelled show.
Honorable mention to Donald Draqer from Mad Men, Walter White from Breaking Bad, and David Tennant's portrayal of the Doctor from Doctor Who.
