I feel lost in skyrim

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 7:23 am

I'm not new to TES (played oblivion) but the I'm no where close to having the knowledge of most in this community. Very glad I found it. So to my point.....I'm feeling very lost in the world of Skyrim. I'm on my 2nd character and I'm currently playing a Khajjit assassin/thief. I love it and thats not the problem, I have played 7-8 hours with this character, lvl 8, with 5 perks in sneak, 1 in archery, and 1 in 1h. Joined the thieves guild but to this point I feel lost and not sure I like the path I have taken with this character.

I'm seriously thinking about starting this guy over and would like some tips, tricks, hints from other players playing similar characters. Even if its not a similar character, feel free to leave a general ES tip!

I really appreciate everything I have learned from trolling this community and hope one day can give something back!

I would say boost your archery more before you do anything else, as long as you like archery. The upper level perks there are badass and by ignoring the damage buff you're missing out on a lot of damage.

Also buff that light armor. The 20% bonuses are great of course and then there's the set bonuses and such that really get you taking much less damage.

I also always feel lost playing an assassin character. Maybe that is because they are so lonely, so detached from everything. I don't know, it is peculiar. I need to play a character that is in touch with the world, e.g. a character that cares. Warriors can deeply care, Priests or Mages can, but I feel like thief characters lack some kind depth that prevents full immersion. Just my few cents on that.

My advice? Try to roll a character that you think would enjoy strolling through Skyrim. A bard, a wanderer, a pilgrim, something like that. And from that, you can start to build on something that accords to your play style. Or just keep going with this character and change its direction. Engage in Illusion magic for example.

Is it a role-playing dilemma, or more of a logistical one for you? I'm actually in the same predicament. One of my two characters is/became a thief/assassin type, yet I was having such a hard time figuring out where to go with her that I started a pure mage (who has been much more gratifying for me, and I almost always prefer a stealth character in Bethesda games).

In my experience with bethesda games i find that the best way to start the game is be a bit of all things. Try every new weapon, potion or spell out. Try everything at least once, then through playing the game you will work out what you like most. Once you do just start concentrating on playing that way. I hope this is of some help.

I've always found that, regarding thief characters, it's more fun to make up your own adventures. Like you pick a target, preferably someone of high status, and you figure out their daily routines etc so you can rob him of everything he owns. Also, find something and make it your calling card that you can leave behind for your victims. I use red mountain flowers.

I would also advise you to take up alchemy.

Another neat trick: if someone is blocking your path and you cannot get around without exposing yourself, try to fire an arrow a few yards away from him, they will likely go investigate the sound and you might be able so slip by unnoticed.

The very best way to enjoy thievery is to pretend you're an evil genius. You grab all the swag and run away while laughing and mocking your victims :)

Lost how? Lost as in you can't decide how to develop your character's skills? Or is it more of a roleplaying/storytelling issue?

You might be onto something here. Maybe I'm not liking the loner lifestyle that is the stealth assassing/thief. Like I said I don't have too much experience with TES and have to find my way in the world of RPG's

I'm wondering if because I am such a social person in real life that has something to do with my in game counterpart? Maybe just like real life I am ment to be the center of attention!

I'll also sign the 'I had trouble playing a Khajiit thief' form. After just a few minutes on the first day, I chose to restart as a Dunmer mage and it's been much easier to fit in. I still want to play a Khajitt thief and I may switch back after I finish the mages college and now that I have greater knowledge of the game. (PS my Khajiit was way too jacked for his role and that bothered me, lol).

I think it is a little bit of both because even starting to think of a warrior type character I'm not sure what to start to focus on in the start of my journey as well as I want to emerse myself in this character so I feel like it needs to be something I relate to......I think....HAHAHA

If its a RP issue (you dont like to be a lonewolf thief/assasin) try playing as a "Roobin Hood" kind of character. For example I steal only from people I know can afford it. And I always leave coins and valuable things in poor peoples homes, in the hmmm, (cant come up with the english word, but you know where you can leave coins in temples and things like that) and when beggars ask me for money I always give them what they need. This helps me not feel like a total jerk when I steal stuff. I have not done the Dark Brotherhood quests so I dont know if that would mean killing innocent people.

Anyway as for game play: I started out putting points in the dmg buff perks (+20%) in one-handed, archery, light armor, sneak and alchemy (just to get a good base of skills). Then I went on investing points in one-handed, archery and sneaking. Getting more of the dmg buff/sneak buff perks and the increased multipliers for sneak attack and dual wield perks in one-handed. Next I will concentrate some more in my alchemy perk tree. I then found the lord stone that is GREAT! (+50 armor and +25% resistance to magic). You should really not use the thief stone too much since it is going to lvl your non-combat skills too much (which leaves you with bad combat skills for your lvl).

I dont know if this is the "ultimate" way to go with a sneaky character but I am right now killing everything I need to kill with ease and have lots of potions/poisons that work well and never have any problem opening the locks I need to open (even if I never invested anything in that perk tree). I use Lydia as my companion which is not really the best way to go since she is not a sneaky companion (using heavy armor). But stupid me helped Sven instead of that archer guy in Riverwood (he is a sneaky companion) and I have not found another one since... :)

I'm thinking of scraping the Khajjit assassin/thief and starting a warrior type. I like smithing and using 1h weapons. Not very big in magic. Just need to figure out if I will be a hero for the imperials or the stormcloaks. I just need to make sure this character keeps my attention because I don't want to change again!
