Few questions about the PC version

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 9:19 am

Are the Doom 1 and 2 games included in the BFG edition the ones already offered on steam or updated versions? (If updated what is changed)

Is there X360 controller support? For Doom 3 and the older games?

Does the game have widescreen support? (I'm assuming yes)

The doom 3 portion has widescreen support but is locked to the preset high level with no ULTRA setting like the old release had though the 1080 widescreen res does look decent it could have been better (ie. the AA is locked at a max of 4x and motion blur can go as high as 32x) but most of the looks in game are still fuzzy since they did not actually remake any of the scenes just added a bit of lighting and other after effects using the original High Setting compressed textures (for some reason they opted to not include the Ultra quality non compressed textures - most likely because the consoles can not handle them !)

The original DOOM and DOOM 2 games are exactly the same as the other release only they also are locked to specific settings and have no options for full screen 1080 playback - On my system it uses black bars on both sides of the screen in full screen @1920x1080 so the resulting image is 1600x1080 and looks horrid ! -- I much prefer using a third party program like Vavoom with the original wad files that allows more settings !

Example screenshot of the original Doom played on this release -

Vs. ORiginal game wad run under Vavoom @ 1920x1080

The Doom 2 secret levels were heavily butchered as a result, you're better off getting it off Steam by itself while it still has the Wolfenstein content intact.

They are certainly not the Steam versions. If I had to take an educated guess, they appear to be emulated versions of the ones available via Xbox Live Arcade. I have the Steam version of Ultimate Doom and the original disk version of Doom 2. Resolution issues notwithstanding, the fidelity of the graphics themselves appear cleaner on BFG than the original versions running in DosBox. The frame rate appears to be a little rougher though... it's not as smooth as the originals (ie; Steam Versions).

Yes, yes, and yes :-) I play with a wired Xbox 360 controller and all 3 games (Doom 1, Doom 2, and Doom 3 + expansions) contain native support. I did have to toggle the controller on in the game options to get it to get it to work, but that wasn't a big deal.

The BFG edition was MADE for console guys!!!! I don't understand why you all are surprised that the PC version doesn't have all the options games MADE for PC have.... Seriously, did none of you do ANY research before purchasing the BFG edition on PC?

It's a 3D version of the game. Id's way of experimenting with 3D and figuring out how to adapt Doom 4 for the Oculus Rift while getting console players to pay for the privilege. That's what consoles are good for, testing out things on people who don't know squat about graphics.

I have to agree entirely.

If you don't have the Occulus Rift then what good is the game?

Oh right cause there is NO reason what so ever to play Doom unless you have a Occulus Rift which isn't even available yet to the public!!!! Wow....just wow......

This is regarding us who already own these games. You've heard of common sense, right?

If we already own Doom1, Doom2, and Doom3, this rerelease is total garbage. I get better classic Doom on the source ports, and Doom3 looks better in the original. These are all facts you would know if you have all these games.

Not to mentioned pointless censoring they did...

"Enhanced lighting"
LOL.
Well even assuming that increasing lightscale was a requiried thing, how can we call it "enhanced" if there's no shadows from flashlight, no muzzlflash from player gunfire and even those weak muzzlflash effects from enemies gunfire don't even cast shadows, very weak imp's fireball effects with no shadow casting......those effects was in original xbox version

Okay now. Take it easy on me, I'm about to faint... I just... I can't take it... my mind simply cannot comprehend how dumbing down a game, censoring the [censored] out of it, and making it look worse can be considered "remastering."

Is logic being [censored] over?

Pretty much. Let's see here...

modified ini settings to "improve" the rendering, forced settings, a lackluster map pack for doom 3 which is mostly just rehashed levels and the Guardian boss without the seekers, a completely butchered Doom 2 iWAD that's missing essential stuff to be fully compatible with the various source ports the community's made , little to no modding support, removal of blood, inability to rebind controls for the 360 version [and possibly others?], horrible doom ports for the classics with some seriously grating sound issues [Good lord that super shotgun sounds horrible], and more for only half the price of a AAA game!

Can we say "Bend over and spread'em"? Seems to be what they were going for. :\

Shame.

A full list of differences can be found http://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_3:_BFG_Edition#Differences_with_Doom_and_Doom_2.Other than for the presence of http://doomwiki.org/wiki/No_Rest_for_the_Living, it is overall inferior or equal to the normal distribution. There's been some clamor over the censored Wolfenstein levels (it is true the secrets are harder to find now that all the walls look the same, and the zombiemen are weaker than the SmurfStaffel were), but it's not really important overall. After all, these old games were a side bonus rather than the main draw of Doom 3 BFG Edition. (They didn't even advertise that NRFTL would be included!)If you want to play the old Doom games; you're better off with the original distribution and some source port such as ZDoom.
