I've finally figured it out!

hmm, i get the map node system now, but idk if it would be good for fallout games like they are now...

like there would be a random encounter and you would go to a generic zone and play like we do now? that would be weird

I think the parts that are blocked off will be used in later DLC's. Seems logical, such as at Mojave Outpost, there's that locked fence. There's also an area like that with the cars. Don't remember other places tho, I know there is more.

Have you played Mount & Blade? Think it like that, but... much better of course, since Mount & Blade was independant developed by some turk and his wife.

Another one which may be similarish to how it could be implemented is Dragon Age which uses the map node method for getting around the game world, although admitadly that only uses 'fixed' random encounters, but I suspect true random encounters wouldn't be too impossible to implement with a similar system.

F:NV is great, its just that sometimes it feels more of "some 3rd world country" than post-nuclear america.

No, it's the lack of the green tinted desolate labyrinth-esque ruins. :P

Yeah, and the barely any radiation which svcks :|.

Even less radiation in original Fallouts, so it ain't exactly a must for a functional fallout game.

Yes, but as someone in other thread, it starts to resemble 3rd world country simulator. I think the one reason why the Capital Wasteland felt so different was because it was so empty. It also doesn't feel right stumbling into settlements every second minute. So my answer is the old style world map.

Good. I'm glad the Capitol Wasteland felt different. I'd be ticked off if I ponied up 60 bucks to have the same experience again.
Metros and office buildings, had fun been there done that on to the desert. :P

Yup. Think you hit the nail on the head. And that's exactly what I'd expect (at the very least) 200 years out.

Fallout New Vegas doesn't feel like a post apocalyptic world - the end. That's all there is to it and its a fact, goodbye.

Fallout New Vegas doesn't feel like a post apocalyptic world - the end. That's all there is to it and its a fact, goodbye.

So groups like Legion, Khans, Powder Gangers, Bright Brotherhood, Brotherhood Of Steel and Kings exist in our current world?
Animals like Giant Ants, Cazadors, Bighorners and Deathclaws exist in our current world?
People go around armed on the streets in our current world?
Buildings in a prosperous city are half-way to collapse cause of bombs exist in our current world?
Using drugs isn't against the law in our current world?

Dude, even if the game doesn't look like it was bombed yesterday doesn't make it so that you can't see that an apocalypse has happened.
This isn't the "survival" part of the apocalypse, this is the aftermath = Rebuilding the world.

Fallout 3 was the only one who went for that atmosphere, though.
It's 200 years after the war, it's should not be expected to still be a handful of survivors struggling to survive in some ruins.

Also I'm not really sure on which I prefer, map-node or sandbox.
Map-node allows people to focus on specific points of interest, allow things to feel larger and allow for some random encounters.
Sandbox just gives you the ability to set of somewhere, then decide otherwise and take a turn or investigate something on the horizon. It's the feeling of walking there yourself that makes the world really come alive.
Approaching the town gates, seeing it take form as you near it, taking notice of the details, rather than just dropping of the map and standing in front of it.
Slap random encounters to fast travel (and perhaps traveling in general) and another point between the to becomes moot.

The question perhaps is how large can you make the sandbox and how large is the area of your story.

Would you rather stare at a red dot floating on a gray background, or just travel yourself and shoot stuff on the way..? :S

Red dot on green background tracking hundreds of miles of travel with real random encounters rather than walking myself across a so-called "town" about the size of my apartment any day of the week, tyvm. :D

Post=after.
Post apocalyptic... could be 1000 years later, and we've teraformed the earth, still post-apocalyptic... Seriously, it's not *directly* post-apocalyptic anymore, it's 200 years later in an area that never got hit hard. But that's okay. They move too much further ahead though, and it will REALLY lose the Fallout flavor. Maybe we need to travel to post-apocalyptic China at that point or Russia. I bet they got really smashed. Even Europe with it's denser than North America populations....

I LOVE NV's atmosphere. It's fascinating watching society rebuild to a prewar level. The postwar hell thesis and the prewar idealized antithesis are coming together to form the new status quo. (I'm such a Caesar wannabe :sadvaultboy: ) A second beginning of history, if you will.

Not working for me either...But I'm glad, she scares me more than the real life Cazador D:

I seriously hope those things never, ever mutate. Keep them away from radiation!!

Aaand, my off-topic contributions to a debate I honestly haven't really been following due to not having played any Fallouts other than 3 and NV ends here. Toodles!

In my opinion, which is no more or less significant than anyone else's, Fallout New Vegas doesn't feel like a post apocalyptic world
