Finally getting skyrim this year tips please!

Post » Wed Nov 07, 2012 7:25 am

Hey guys, i was kinda confused on how to put the title down and im really confused on which specific board i should have posted this on but hopefully you guys would help me here

Earlier this year, i dont know if you guys remember me but i always mentioned about building a PC, well around March time i sold my PS3 along with skyrim and eventually invested money and built my first PC 1 month back. i havent been on skyrim ever since i sold my ps3 so i decided to treat myself and wait a little longer until December to buy skyim premium edition instead of just buying it off steam.

I will be new to skyrim once again and i am looking for tips on what i should do for the game! Are there any mods that you reccommend? what decisions should i carry out in the game? any good beginners loot to find near riverwood after escaping alduin? where should my first home be? or which house mod should i get? etc.

thanks for reading and thanks again if you took time to respond to this!

P.S. Mods, if im in the wrong board then can you move the thread? and sorry :)

My advice: Play through without mods first. One you have a feel for how the base game plays, it's far easier to trouble-shoot problems introduced by mods (and mod conflicts).

Don't force MQ too fast. Explore the world, look at the all possabilities, try to make concept of your character and stick to it.
Try not to do too many "guild quests" with the same character, try not to fast travel too much for you have so many different encounters in the world :D
And well, don't pull Enchanting with Smithing together, it will kinda ruin your experience for you will be very OP.
There is a big big world out there, and give it a chance. MQ is awesome, but it's only like 5% of the whole story.

Welcome back!

Mods I won't play without:

SkyUI
Same Walk and Run Speeds
Skyrim Speeds
Immersive HUD
UFO - Ultimate Follower Overhaul
Lost Art of the Blacksmith
Kill Them Generals

All available at Skyrim Nexus, just search by those names and you should find them easily. I'm sure there are more but I'm on a different computer and can't access my mod list - but that's a start.

^ but i advise the unofficial patch mods.

Textures mods are "no problem"
Mods that include Mesh data "can (very rare)" give CTD. (but usually the are all tested and work)

thanks! dont worry i did 2 playthroughs on ps3 and i never rush the main quest.

im going to be a ranger/hunter/merchant loyal to the Empire so im going to be strolling around the tundras of whiterun and The rift hunting for deer and selling hides etc. :)
i Think i want to smith a little so i can improve armours, there are only a few vanilla armours i love and i want to improve them as it gets harder each level i advance instead of using ugly higher armour

My first suggestions is to play a character without mods first, the reason for this is even tho you did this on PS3 it allows you to see how the game works on the PC without mods. It will also give you a feeling of what you feel like you want to get fixed. Some mods however I do recommend you even on first character. The advantage with having done it like this is that you can easier see if a mod does mess up things it shouldn't. :)

A few mods could very easy be installed directly as they are not game changing, but will make your life so much easier.

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19 - Unofficial Skyrim patch
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/23491 - Unofficial Dawnguard patch
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/25127 - Unofficial Hearthfire patch
If you don't have Dawnguard or Hearthfire do not install the patches for those.

If you plan on playing with mouse keyboard I would recommend you the following mods
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/3863 - SkyUI
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/3222 - Immersive hud

These 3-5 are pretty much the only ones you want to install on your first playthrough on PC. The highres texture DLC's from Bethesda could also be downloaded as they are after all official DLC's.

Once you have played your character a bit and given a thought to what type of changes you want then we can start talking the game changing mods.
Do you want mods that toally change the basics of the game?
Should the mod be as lore friendly as possible? You can keep your game 100% true to lore or take it 100% the other way. it's a choice you will have to think about.

For getting mod my personal preference is Nexus, using their mod manager and I love it.

Skyrim Nexus has a bigger community but there are more bells and whistles involved when it comes to the actual act of installing a mod. Steam Workshop is smaller, but it's neat and tidy and mod installation is automatic. So you decide.

My recommendation: If you'll be using magic, get a mod that boosts its effectiveness. I've made one (link in the signature), but there are a lot of options.

Most definitely!

If you're into mages, you might want to download a magic-enhancing mod. I use Better Magic (also available at the Nexus), and that's all I've ever needed, but there are some that make wholesale changes to the magic system that might suit you (Better Magic just tweaks things a little).

Also, a little mod that has a big effect for me: Rebalanced Potion Weights.
