Finally playing Red Dead Redemption!

Post » Wed Dec 04, 2013 6:10 am

So I picked up RDR on Xboxlive for $8 and am still on the starting ranch. From my understanding of the game it's like GTA but western. Are there any tips and tricks you guys can recommend? Like good ways of making money, game play tips, where can I get a new outfit? Stuff that would be good to know but nothing too spoilerific.

Crap I just realized I put in the wrong title. I meant Red Dead Redemption!

Punch people out near train tracks. Punch people out ontop tall buildings. Go to thieves landing and go to the building with the glass and lasso/fight them there. They fall through and die.

Well later in the game you can find buffalo and their skins are worth a lot of money. Early on in the game though, getting a treasure map from some guy (I forget, but I think its a random encounter with good Karma) and finding the treasures will get you a good amount of money as well. Another way to get some money would be to just hunt animals and sell their skins and stuff.

Lasso a lady up and leave her on the train tracks... wait til the train comes.

Hunting is good for money, playing poker can be lucrative. I hunted quite a bit... Shot damn near everything that got within 50 feet of me. I also had a hunting outfit that gave me double of everything I got from each animal... I wore that when hunting the rare animals, and the buffalo... That raked in some sweet cashola.

don't bother buying any horses from a General Store, you can go tame wild horses that are much faster and have more Stamina

if you have to travel a really far distance (like, from Mexico to the most north east part of the map), set up your camping site and you can fast travel to your destination (however, I don't think it works in missions).

I played half the game before I realized there was fast-travel from campfires.... (I just didn't see it)

But riding a horse for 15 minutes does get boring, so I do recommend the fast-travel for long distances, unless you are specifically looking for things to hunt, collect, etc.

Until you get to West Elizabeth and then you'll want to buy the American Standard Bread. Sure you can tame it but once it's dead, its dead. With the certificate you can just call for another one. It's second only to the War Horse but that has to bought online. Also look into getting Undead Nightmare if you can, it's a fun expansion with some awesome easter eggs.

If my horse died... I'd go out and tame another one... Though I did buy a few different horses at one point...

Easy for you to say. When your horse is one of the three rare horses then you're alot better off buying a certificate at a store. There is a big performance leap between the standard crumby horses and the three special horses.

I've lost a special horse before... It wasn't easily replaced... but I did replace it.

Yeah, it does. I was very impressed with the game when I had a PS3 on loan.

GOTY is better as it includes Undead Nightmare and some of the DLCs, including that warhorse thingy. It's a wonderful horse to have (and the deed is in your invo from the go)

I really ought to re-play that game. Starting to miss me some good ol' Western adventure. :D Got tired of playing GTA V, and now getting tired of playing Skyrim.

But yes, avoid the cougars. >:[ They're horrible little beasties.

Before you head to Mexico, save up a bunch of skins and plants from the middle territory. They are worth more in farther away places.

Oh and do Stranger missions as often as you see them. There is at least one that you can miss out on which is the best (and most cryptic one) in the game. You'll piece its meaning together when you finish the game.

You must really be doing something wrong if you're that hard up for cash. Between gold, capturing bounties alive and poker, money is ripe for the taking.

Ah, Red Dead Redemption. Probably my most played game ever.

Remember to roll. A lot. Try flicking the right stick upward for quick headshots. The LeMat Revolver is your friend.
