I'm finding sneaking and daggers to be really difficult

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 4:35 pm

I'm in a den right now where if you dont sneak you set off crypts where enemies come out of the woodwork. If you sneak if you set one off and get seen, and instead of fighting them one at a time you set them all off at once. Also daggers and duel wielding i'm not really seeing the benefit of using 2 weapons instead of one. I'm switching back and forth between spell to heal in one hand and going back to duel wield. Ill heal go back to duel wield. But im not really doing extra damage with teh two weapons. You have to use both triggers and its not really faster then just hitting repeatedly with one weapon. I'm finding the second weapon somewhat useless. I'm guessing there is a speed advantage or is their a perk later that increases speed?

It's awesome and super fun but just realy difficult. If i had a powerful weapon and a shield these early levels woudl be a lot easier.

Anyways great game. I like the tree system. It's like bethesda took things from wow as far as builds. Puzzles from games like uncharted. Stuff from assassins creed. It's awesome. But really tricky.

I'm learning and getting better but I'm still not seeing the benefits of my hard work as far as sneaking and duel wielding. I'm backstabbing trying to run around. Using my stamina. But still.

I get stuck in sneak mode more times than not. Vs just running around and killing stuff. I'm trying to duel wield when I feel like i'd be better off just using a one handed weapon and a shield.

A perk increases dual-wiedling attack speed. Another adds power attack damage when dual-wielding. I'd at least pick the speed swinger before dual-wielding. It can be taken twice.

Also, a tip for those crypts:

When you sneak around, pay closer attention to the corpses. You can tell which ones are going to come to life, and if they're out in the open, you can kill them before they wake up. If you're caught in a scripted mass-zombie waking, just be fast. Stab as many as you can while they're still getting up, which takes enough time that you can actually do a fair bit of damage before you're seen.

yeah i just went through and avoided them all. It just svcks if you set one off. I'm not doing enough damage with daggers where its like hacking like crazy where if i had a better weapon it would be so much easier. It's fun as heck but I feel like i'm working so hard when it could be easier. But I am getting super smart on how to approach things. I feel like a rogue. It's just really difficult.

Additional note? Don't bother with daggers unless you get some higher level ones. I'm a thief/assassin with dual wielded swords. And I didn't even dual wield until I got my One Handed in the 50 range (Where I had access to some of the perks).

So you can be a thief with a sword for a while.

I'm 15 or something and the highest level dagger I've come across is steel, which is garbage.

yeah i wish daggers were more prevalent. It's super fun. It's just really hard. Maybe I'll put a sword in my off hand. So I can still use the silent stuff with daggers. That's how i used to play wow. Dagger in main for backstab and silent stuff and a sword in off hand for more damage. Or even a dagger in off hand for silent kills.

Sounds like both you and the OP need to level your Sneak up and get the 15x sneak-attack perk.

I one-shot most opponents with my Dwarven dagger (enchanted and poisoned for tougher enemies).

thats the thing are daggers really powerful. i just switched to a mace. its so much easier. I feel like adding health and just damange would be so much easier. Its almost like being a rogue is backwards and makes things harder. I hope you are right that they become super powerful and the game is balanced that way. Because right now there really is no point to using a dagger. Or even improving stamina. you can do much more damage with a weapon that does more damage in one shot.

From my understanding daggers use less stamina. So why am I increasing stamina as a rogue? I'd be better off increasing health. Do you know what I mean?

I use daggers. Granted you have to move in and out. Strike and move. It gets a bit repetetive. But it's effective. Until you get more then 2 creatures attacking you at the same time. Then you may want to switch to swords. Favorite system svcks. Just saying. :D

Daggers combined with stealth *is* kind-of their point. Right now, I have only 40 one-handed and 2 damage increasing perks chosen, but my o-so-sweet dagger does 630 backstab damage. :)

I gave up on dual wielding when I found out how much fun it is to shield bash enemies

It's also really hard to increase the lockpicking skill to take advantage of that tree.

Am I wrong in thinking it's almost like bethesda wants you to have a jack of all trades character that uses swords for regular battle and a dagger just for specific tasks? Because that's what it seems to me. It seems like it's really hard to make a class specific character. It's like I would have a warrior and then use a dagger for specific tasks which i don't want.

I could almost like freeze enemies and then backstab with a dagger. I don't know. It just seems silly though and not class specific.

Wait until dark in a major city.

Then go get some practice.

I'm currently using bow in both close combat (by kiting enemies or letting my companion tank them) and while starting a combat. Will go on like this until I get my 16x backstab damage perk, then I'll start to use daggers. I recommend you the same (FYI I am playing in Master difficulty without any problems).

Daggers aren't meant for stealth until later in the game. It's an advanced version of stealth only because you have to invest points in sneak and have your sneak level, gear be really high.

It's all bow in the early stages for true stealth class. You get to daggers later, IMO.

Sneaking in the early levels is indeed hard. I recommend you don't even wear light armor and just wear normal clothing.

Sneak attacking with a dagger with that x15 damage multiplier perk is fun, but can be dangerous if the opponent doesn't go down in a few hits.

But otherwise, stealth is a fun aspect. Though I wish the dagger had a bigger multiplier.

Yes, the sneaking tree bow perk (3x dmg instead of 2x) is good for this if i'm not sure about the Draugr i pop an arrow in him if it's nothing i pick up arrow again and move on.
Most importantly they don't always see you so back of even if they come alive and break line of sight (hide behind a pillar or so) and wait for them to think you have run of and go back to their default place.

Spoiler
Works for the more intelligent mobs as well. Shoot an arrow into him and move away a bit so they don't see you if they investigate where they pointy wooden object came from.
