Finesse and role balance

Post » Sat Mar 09, 2013 3:39 am

Here's a nice tricky one for suggestions. Finesse rewards actions such as:
  • Staggering, Stunning and Knocking-Back your opponent
  • Blocking Attacks
  • Avoiding and dodging attacks
  • Taking advantage of Synergies, crowd control and enemy status-aliments
Now you can probably see from that short list that if you're a tank, you will get regular opportunity to earn finesse, either by blocking, dodging, staggering and so on.

If on the other hand you play as a healer or long range dps, how would you earn your finesse?

As a ranged class you will still need to dodge&block attacks, i'm pretty sure that sometimes you will have mobs beating on you as well. Now it's pretty clear that melee classes are going to earn finesse a lot quicker than ranged classes because they will be performing all of the actions you mention constantly in the fight. Plus you don't know if they will have different finesse tables for ranged classes and melee classes.

Everything depends on your skills. The better you perform during the fight the more Finesse you receive. You can use Ultimates more often and thus deal more damage. You receive more rewards.

That's just the way it is.

I'm assuming that "Taking advantage of Synergies, crowd control and enemy status-aliments" would be something that long-range classes might get more opportunity to do. But generally in combat systems where blocking/dodging is possible, everyone needs to engage in one of those things to live. As a ranged class, you want to maintain range somehow, so it will probably involve either stopping your opponent from moving (with roots/snares) or moving away from them well (probably with dodging).

For healers, they might grant finesse for "actual healing done". Neverwinter (which is having beta weekends now) has a similar (but much less complex) system, and grants clerics "action points" (which fuel their version of an ultimate) for both damage and healing. For comparison, damage classes fill it with damage done and abilities used, the tank class also gets points for taking damage and I think blocking attacks. I don't remember exactly, so I'll have to check when it opens up again.
