Firaxis doing a XCOM: Enemy Unknown remake

Or UFO: Enemy Unknown, whatever you want to call it. Looking forward to this!

"Unlike 2K Marin's previously announced XCOM shooter, which sparked tempers among longtime fans for turning its back on the series' cerebral roots, this title is a full-on strategy game that puts players in command of a global anti-alien defense force," Game Informer said.

--

"We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."

Firaxis' XCOM has destructible tactical environments, and fuses a real-time strategic view with turn-based combat.

Aww Firaxis, you ruined the Civ series. Boo, no respect for you.

Hell YEAH!!!!

This news has made my day.

Although the lackluster state of Civ V does raise some concern... But the key words in that press statement that caught my eye were "tactical", "turn-based" and "full-on global strategy" - that's enough to get me excited. It's nice just to be playing a new TBS that isn't a Civ game!

There's always Xenonauts to also look forward to in any case.

Wasn't the first one named 'enemy unknown' before it was renamed to 'ufo defense'?

I still need to finish that first game, it's just that the sound/music of that game has become nightmare inducing due to all the horror I have seen in that game. Not sure if I'm willing to spend full price on a remake though, but it certainly peaks my interest more than that fps game that is being made.

Hard to not be excited about this, UFO: Enemy Unknown 18 years old now but is still the best strategy game ever made. Hope they don't mess it up :)

Nice, Firaxis knows strategy so my hopes are high. I'm glad there's an alternative to that FPS game that's XCOM in name only.

Another alternative would be the upcoming indie game Xenonauts, which is very much inspired by XCOM.

It seems the original games are on sale on steam at the moment, coincidence?

Yay. Looking forward to this very much.

Now, if only someone was to do this for Fallout too... :deal:

X-Com: Apocalypse was by far the best game in the series, in my opinion. Coincidentally, it was also the first one I played. Still up there as probably my favourite game of all time. If this new game takes the same elements of political interaction from Apocalypse, then I'll be happy.

Some information on RPS: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/01/09/xcom-remake-screens-details-worries/
What's with these companies being so desperate to make it a US-centric prequel? It seems to be the big commonality in modern attempts at doing XCOM.

It still looks light years ahead of 2K's FPS game. I'm not one to judge either way until I see some real footage, but I'm optimistic for the time being.
