first horror game, ever.

iv never actually bought a horror game like this before, so the appeal is jumpscares, monsters, and a chilling storyline? can one of the vets tell me what to expect from this? because i already want to buy it.

We don't know anything about it so we don't know what we can expect from it.
Go buy REvil 4, it's probably going to be a little like that, at least with the shoulder camera thingie and "survival horror blended with action gameplay".
Also go play Amnesia, Slender, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, Resident Evil 1 Remake and Fatal Frame.
Should give you some perspective on the horror genre and allow you to compare different types of horror games.

Never really liked horror games, except for the Walking Dead game. Bethesda really seems to have a fetish for horror. From the haunted place in Fallout 3, which was unnecessary in that World. To Dragonborn looking like it was inspired by Lovecraft. Looks like they want to make a mark on the genre itself. I do remember playing Resident Evil 2, that was pretty good. Scared me as a child, but now I'm grown and have grown desensitized to everyday normal horrors. I'd like to see the envelope pushed, burned, turned to ash.

For me, horror is something people do and not all about monsters & demons. I recently seen "Sinister," don't want to spoil anything but just horror in general is better off without the supernatural element. The first Scream was pretty good, because it was just humans. Its just better if a human is behind the horror, you know?

I have no idea what point I am trying to drive.

Oh well, happy 4/20 everybody.

You see Doom as a horror game?
Despite having bucketloads of ammo, rockets, and OP weapons?

I don't know what the hell this game is about, but it appeals to me with the gritty and dark tone.

Play (or watch playthroughs) of the first 3 Silent Hill games. Especially Silent Hill 3. They're much closer to what The Evil Within is trying to achieve, IMO.

i hope so, i watched the condemned play throughs, and i hope this game is a bit scarier. (no offense to people who will murder me through the internet with their sheer love of the game.)

Well Hermaeus Mora and mostly anything around him are based on the Cthulhu Mythos

Honestly I would suggest starting out easy before getting into anything big, Home and Lone Survivor are both indie horror games that might be good for a beginner and once done that if you have Half-life I would recommend Cry of fear which has a few jump scares. Also the first few RE games would be good to play as well as the first few Silent hill games though I don't consider either really scary.

Uhhh while Sinister was creepy as shhit, it was indeed very super natural. In fact the premise of the movie was based around a super natural plot.

Loved both Codemned games. Terrifying first person melee -- not exactly what you'll see in The Evil Within, but great nonetheless.

I recommend checking out the original Silent Hill, Dead Space and The Suffering, which is a really great forgotten game.
