[REQ] A "flat" paper map. No 3D GPS.

This was a good start to a great idea. http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/10044

Unfortunately the mod author has abandoned the mod. It had a "flat" file but this was removed for some reason. This is his last post from the Nexus.

Hi , thank you all for your kind comments!

Unfortunately , I finished the game and didn't like it enough for another playthrough , as a result I don't have the game or the modding tools installed anymore.

For the people who want the flat map and are willing to play without any markers , you can do it yourselves with NIFskope :

1. download nifskope from here : http://sourceforge.net/projects/niftools/files/latest/download?source=files
2. open "/Data/Meshes/PaperMapHeight/mesh.nif" in nifskope.
3. right click in the viewport , on the actual terrain object.
4. select "Transform >" / "Scale Vertices"
5. change Z to 0.0 (leave X,Y unchanged at 1.0)
6. click "Scale"
7. Save

It actually is _that_ simple , don't change anything else.

I am am thinking a flat paper version that would incorporate one of the in-game maps. Preferably the one that has the fold marks on the page.

It was also suggested, in the Nexus thread, to implement something on the sides to cover the blue void. This could be a good place for your hands, although it may be hard to set them to your race, gender and skin tone or current gauntlets.

Furthermore, there seems to be an issue with it displaying the map markers properly. I could live without that as I like the "Better Quest Objectives" by - whickus. I am not sure if that mod covers all the quest in the game yet, but still.

This would also prevent any fast travel, but I am ok with that as well. I would like some sort of multiple custom map marking ability. I could see it as being marks in red, like notes in blood or just black from an "x" or " + " or " - " made from charcoal.

I just don't posses the common knowledge and talent to pull something like this off.

I'd hoped that one of the talented modders of the community would take on the obviously welcomed task of doing something like this.

Thanks,

- Mr 5

In the twilight hours, I have been experimenting doing something exactly like this.

Don't tell anyone though :ninja:

My method was to create a flat-plane LOD that would cover Skyrim and be a one-way visible plane. You could see it from above, but not below. Unless I critically misunderstand how LOD and the map works, the LOD geometry is what's used by the map system; this method would allow you to look up and not see the map, but when looking down when entering the map screen, it would display. I don't think it would hork with markers either. I've spent literally 15 minutes on this, so, I'm probably wrong about a lot of things.

At least you are toying with the idea, or something similar.

I did find the file of the map I had in mind as a texture replacer. It's the Civil War Map01.

I want something to give me the feeling of having a real map to navigate from and make personal marks on. I think someone had a mod out that actually let you equip a paper map like a shield and you looked down at it. I would have to search for it.

EDIT :

Yes! I knew I'd seen it before. For some reason I was having trouble with the search function. ( aging mind)

Thank you for that. It is better than the world map, if we could only have a way to place markers ....

For marker functionality, you're definitely going to have to utilize the existing map system. I'll probably be tinkering with this idea this weekend.

The feeling I want it to have is unrolling a paper map on the ground, or on a wooden table, with the same 3rd-quarter camera perspective.

Exactly. The table or ground thing is a great thought. ( EDIT : As long as it's flat and doesn't give the 3D impression of being a God looking down on the world.)

I was even brain storming, although my version of storming is more like a light mist, with something like the unrolling of the elder scroll.

I reviewed the hand held mod and while it is cool, it just doesn't give the details that is needed for proper navigation. ( EDIT :That is why I just moved along from it before.) One needs to get down and get close with the zoom for tight areas. Like the map markers, this can only be done with the world map.

EDIT 2 : I'm certain you will come up with something great. You are a talented fellow, indeed.
