Flickering with VSYNC OFF and FPS > 100 - DRIVER ATI

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 3:25 pm

Hello,

With vsync turn off (ATI 5870), there is a problem with the ati driver.

With scene where there is water fall, or water, the screen flickering with color.

Sometimes it does a black screen for less than 0.1 s, sometimes half brown screen or other strange things that look likes as big graphic card artifact. I m afraid that my hardware have a problem but it was cool.

I coudln't reproduce this bug with fraps like it seems linked to high fps (when fps go over than 100fps) and fraps reduce the fps.

If someone have an idea or report also this bug , im interested ?

Yes this also happens to me ( Nvidia GTX 480) when the fps is like 100 fps + ( looking at the ground e.t.c). Think it is just major screen tearing.

Nice friend :) Me it happens when :

- I'm under waterfall
- i'm a the top of a rock on mountain
- in cavern, when there is some water

I can reproduce it very easily when it's happen (just have to turn around 1 or 2 meters of the position).

i will try to do a video

I have an idea.

Turn VSync on to prevent your framerate from exceeding 60 fps (assuming a 60 Hz monitor refresh rate). Tearing problem solved!

As an added benefit, this also prevents your graphics card from rendering frames your monitor can't show - whatever the monitor refresh rate is, that is the fastest it can update. Having higher than that number in fps is an absolute waste of processing power.

That's precisely what I get, precisely.

Thanks for the link, I searched YT for one before but nothing about it was there. It was mentioned http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1262941-flicking-water-sound/page__p__19197214__fromsearch__1#entry19197214 as well. At first I thought it was only me I never found anywhere or anyone else that had it. Guess it was only a matter of time.

Nothing I try fixes it, vsync on + off, nothing. The vsync ini. tweak on or off, nothing. Forcing it on or off through video card controls, nothing. I hope they tend to this because it's driving me up the F^$KING wall. Sorry, just frustrated. Last time I'm buying a game day one, no matter how much I want it.

it's a common idea :) but a game with more 100 fps is alwars must reactive than a game with 60 fps.

More fluent, fastest etc cause all the game speed is relative to fps.

So I just posted a thread on this very topic, for me it was just having vsync off that made it flicker (had it disabled through nvidia control panel) but I really want to play with vsync off because I can't stand the mouse lag with vsync on. Any ideas?

I wish. Though I have been thinking of a nVidia card next after this ATI 5850. But in that thread I linked to even those with nVidia cards have the same problem.
