Flying in Fallout

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 1:44 pm

(SPOILER ALERT) sorry bud!

So a couple of days ago i finished the boomers task of recovering the crashed b-29 from the bottom of lake mead and immediately i wondered if i would ever be able to fly the plane, and then i started to think about all the other planes i've seen in the game, the bombers from rivet city in Fallout 3, the cargo transports, personal planes in Fallout new vegas. has any one ever had the desire to be able to fly these planes? i know i have drifted off in my head for many minuets thinking about the quests, or opportunities that would come from the ability to fly (think parachuting into the legion base at night). Then i thought about what about motorcycles, cars, hell tanks! dont get me wrong i absolutly LOVE fallout games, every one of them and i love oblivion, but has anyone else ever thought about how much fun it would be to cruise around in a tank? or any vehicle? any one have any desire with this as i do? maybe the next fallout with vehicles? or a DLC even? tell me what you think (and bethesda for that matter. :fallout:

Some sort of vertabird would be best. However, the problem comes with the way oblivion, i mean, FNV is portaled. When flying above the strip for example, you would be seeing the ultra low detail version, rather than the high detailed version that you see when you walk in. This was an especially bad problem in the DC area of FO3, but it would be much improved in Vegas. I remember there was an open cities mod for oblivion that, combined with some dragon flying, was actually pretty good.

1. Please add spoiler tags, I had no idea the plane was in Lake Mead - thank you very little for that.

2. Flight won't work well in the Fallout3 or New Vegas game worlds because the levels were designed with that in mind. If you fly up, you'll see buildings without roofs and massive amounts of un-completed area that players can't normally see because we're "contained" in the areas they want us. The only way a flying mod/thing would work in these games is if the world were designed to support it. Unfortunately its not, and flight would be immediately and horrifically immersion breaking.

They should have a Dune Buggy or something of the sort, Mad Max style.

All I wanna do is fire one of their howitzers. Or have one, that'd be cool.

Nope.
If I want to fly a plane I'll play Saints Row or GTA.
Wouldn't care if it was in though cause I wouldn't use it.

I have not seen working vehicles at all. It seems they lost the technology. They'll have cars working again before they get planes.

I would think that the graphics issues would be minimal: after all, it would be based on viewing distance which is already part of the game mechanics. Morrowind (Bethesda's TES game before Oblivion) had a couple of types of flying that worked just fine.

How about a kit type helicopter like the one in Mad Max?

It would be nice to have some type of transport besides the old boots, flying or not. Horses would work with the theme, and shouldn't have been too difficult as they were part of Oblivion. Not a complaint, just a thought.

I suppose I could say I took it to an extreme with saying flying as the first thing, maybe something for the fallout games to build up to, but if the brotherhood of steel can have a base on a giant oil rig why cant i look at the top of buildings XD, also i would be extremely happy with even the addition of just another mode of transportation.

Agreed. A vertibird can fly like a plane or a helicopter. They could control it by putting an invisible ceiling on your height, and keeping the speed to a minimum. Not sure how it would expand the gameplay or missions, but I'd welcome it.

The engine can't handle it sadly. There's only limited vehicle use in the universe too. Oil's all but gone, and the technology base hasn't quite gotten to the point to have vehicles powered by alternate means everywhere yet. There's some vertibird use and you can get a car in Fallout 2, so the precedent is there, but for now it's feet 'n' brahmin for getting around.

The engine can handle it. Somewhat. The Jet Pack mod for Fallout 3 worked wonderfully as long as you stayed below ~35-40MPH or so. Go any faster than that and you run the risk of out-pacing the game's ability to load the environment. If you do manage to out-pace the engine, however, all sorts of wierd stuff happens. And then it crashes.I know this firsthand, having used said jetpack. If I just jammed the throttle down I'd make it maybe one or two cells before I bumped into my desktop, but if I paced myself I could fly from Raven Rock to Rivet City. With a jetpack a speed cap of about 20-25MPH would negate any chance of outrunning the engine, and it's still a fair clip faster than walking.

Something like a helicopter or jetpack would plausibly work. As for opening up more gameplay/combat, you can use a jet pack or heli to land troops in places the enemy wouldn't expect them to land. Or, and this is especially true with jetpacks, just literally jump barriers once thought impenetrable. You can also use such devices to get to some epic sniping locations. All else fails they're a great way to bug out.

Well it doesnt has to be a vehicle really, i find it weird that we still dont get to ride on a animal, like Bighorners or Brahmin.

Or what's anoying me is, in Fallout they can build robots but cant build a simply mountain bike ? or just a plain metal cart/plank with 4 weels ?

Oh well, guess they want to keep something for Fallout 4....

i was under the impression that the cars of 2077 ran on nuclear fission powered engines, and i also gotta say that the boomers make bio-diesel fuel, there for they can make oil, so the oil is there it just takes time and caps to make it, and i cant see any other faction (at the moment for me in fallout new vegas) that wants fuel other then the boomers. but its possible, and also there is always battery powered cars or solar (which of course uses batteries).
