FNVEdit Merged Patch or Wrye Flash Bashed Patch

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 12:11 pm

Title says it all. What are the differences between the patches the two tools creates, and which will produce the best results with game stability being more important than mod integration? Oh, and is there a third option?

I always use TESsnip to merge mods, then you see direct if it is going to work or if they are incompatible.

FNVEdit's merged patch can only merge lists, whereas Wrye Flash can merge any records. FNVEdit is much easier to use, but WF is a lot more powerful. Which one to use really depends on what sort of mods you have.

Wrye Flash is a lot more powerful, but is also a lot more complicated to install, set-up, and run. You need a particular versions of Python and NET installed for it to work, and if you have a 64bit OS, the version of Python you need for Wrye might not be compatible with your OS.

I used Wrye for Oblivion (32bit OS), and used it for awhile for FO3. When I switch to Win7 64bit, I could not get it to work, so I switched to FNVEdit and never went back to Wrye. Perhaps newer versions of Wyre are more compatible with 64bit OS. You will need to check this, if running 64bit OS..

I use FNVEdit for FONV with no problems. I suggest using this first. If you are having mod problems, then try Wrye ...

Wrye is the most versatile option.

Everything you need to install Wrye Flash is also everything you need to install Wrye Bash - get the package called Wrye Python 03a http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22368.

It will install all needed components. If you ever need to update anything though only use the 32 bit versions even if your OS is 64 bit.

I will only comment that Wrye is much better supported than FNVEdit, as folks will be much happier with the level of help that they get.

Don't get me wrong, FNVEdit is a great tool and JustinOther is an enormous help, but Wrye is simply better supported now

FNVEdit has a more complete manual, so if you like reading and tutorials, you may not need a ton of support for FNVEdit given the manuals we have.

I would not give up one over the either, but if your stuck in a custom situation, there are alot of Wrye folks to help out here.

I never had any problems using Wrye Flash with Windows 7 64-bit so either you didn't reinstall it after switching your OS or something messed up on your end. I have used the Fallout 3 version and the Fallout: New Vegas version on Windows 7 64-bit and the FNV version has been on my system since the first version.

I have both FNVEdit and Wrye Flash, and had tried both (not at the same time) trying to make my game crash less often. I do the master update thing with Edit and for the most part used bashed patch because BOSS supposedly includes bashed tags specific to individual mods it sorts (though I'm not sure that feature is implemented yet as I don't see mention of the tags in the report). I used the merged patch with Fallout 3, though, and wasn't sure what it actually did. Not sure why I never used Bash with Fallout 3, I used it with Oblivion.

Oops, thanks for the correction. :)

I fixed the post, was meant as a huge nod to Wrye. I must have been tired.

I have written both FNVEdit manuals and love the tool, but I think Wrye has a greater following in the community now and I very much enjoy the amount of support its developers give the community.

I have to say, even though this is off topic, the Manual you and Justin put out is simply amazing, i was able to do some things in 5 min that I had spent a whole after noon trying before. That was merging Eve.esm, esp and the operation anchorage esp into one esm. So i could port it for my own use in NV, thank you for that.

Wrye Flash = mutch better developer support, compatible with BOSS, easy to handle, bashed patch easier to understand and to implie.

Btw. I don't know if you guys figured out that no item sorter mod is needed if you use the sorter option of Wrye Flash.

Yeah, it's great because it even works on modded items and mod-added items. Unfortunately, its only a direct port from FO3 right now, it hasn't been fleshed out for the new item types in NV.
