Check out this link to another thread on here that discusses how to level up your followers. In the first post there is a link to a "list" that describes all the followers stats in detail. I found it very useful in determining what follower will compliment your character best. Personally I prefer Jzargo because he can level up all the way to 81 with you.

^ Yeah that is great that he levels so much.

I never knew Marcurio only went to level 40.

Like I said for being a lower level [especially compared to me] he never dies against enemies.

As far as sneak, they all sneak if you are sneaking?! Maybe they blow your cover because of heavy armor noise? I loved having Faendal as well, plus he is so positive but very weak. Even with enchanted armor and apparel he was always taking a knee. If you want a true follower, go get Mjoll the Lioness. She is the most powerful and cannot die!

NPCs have their own sneak ability, and if it isn't high enough (or their armour is too loud) they will be detected. Interestingly (or not...) there's a setting in the editor for each NPC to take their sneak score from yours instead, but it's always unticked. Jenessa is better than most at sneaking, but I found that as soon as an enemy started actively searching for us she would de-cloak and attack.

Noted. I'm on the 360 so no console commanding him to play nice. However, I use lightening spells too...so should be epic zap-fest.

Mjoll is a beast, no doubt. She just talks too much. After a few hours of it, she becomes annoying. Maybe if Bethesda increased her dialog options it wouldn't be so bad...but after the billionth time hearing about her mother sword training her, or her warnings about dwemer ruins (yes I know, that steam centurion pwnt you...and not me) I start looking for the Tamriellic version of duct tape.

[Bold added]

You are correct about that. The first time I used her as a follower, my dremora character took her along while doing elements of the main quest. During "The Way of the Voice" while Arngeir is relating quest information, she was busy going on with her talking thus making it more difficult to hear what Arngeir was saying. Perhaps followers are best seen and not heard.

I just recently started traveling with Aranea, and I have to agree with the people above who said, "run in quick to get your kills before she clears the entire room." I got her when I was level 37. She's downright terrifying. She caused a frost dragon to land with two lightning blasts, nearly killed it outright. Other mages I've worked with are Brelyna and Eola. Both of them are pretty good in a fight. Eola will resurrect the first thing you kill, so try to kill something tough. Brelyna and Eola both tend to charge after things, so you have to be careful in especially hazardous areas, like Dwemer ruins.

Those of you who think Lydia's tone is annoying when you trade items should try Brelyna. "I'm a mage, not a pawn shop, you know." I don't mind. I don't mind Lydia either.

I've had bad experiences with Jenassa. I had a spellsword that ran with her. She was always shooting me in the back or getting in the way of my flames. Her dialogue is tolerable, though.

Erik is probably my favorite. Such a nice boy, and awesome in a fight. Argis is a close second. He's technically the same as Lydia, but he seems better at everything somehow. When he says he's sworn to carry my burdens, he sounds like he means it.

I want to use Mjoll, because she's unkillable. But I can't stand her dialogue. I usually dump her after about two dungeons.
