Font Unreadable on SDTV

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 5:40 am

I am reporting a problem with the text in the game. The font in menus, on loading screens, etc. is incredibly difficult to read on a full screen SDTV (non widescreen). I've had absolutely no problems reading the fonts used in past Bethesda games such as Fallout 3 or Oblivion on this TV and did not expect to have trouble now. The font is readable on youtube videos of the game, but in the case of my display, is too narrow, small, and clumps too closely together. If I could return the game, I would.

For reference purposes this is with the PS3 version. However I imagine this has more to do with the font than the console itself.

A note: some gamers have remarked that this is a non-issue because SDTVs are old technology. I've had zero problems playing games on my PS3 for 5 years. There's no excuse for ignoring SDTV after 5 years of precedent. Also we don't all have the luxury of buying an HDTV right now.

If I take my Xbox and plug it into the SDTV in my guest room it looks like that with any game. The display settings are designed for High Definition, play around with the display settings on the xbox and you can make it a little better, but this isnt just a Skyrim issue.

Good grief man, it's almost 2012 already.
Pretty sure every game would look terrible on a SDTV.

It's standard by now.

Standard isn't standard anymore. It's outdated. Most games look like that on my SDTV.

Ya a few years ago when my HDTV was $1800 I might agree that HDTVs were still out of a lot of people's price range, but now (just after a brief search) similar TVs are $400-$500 and BETTER 40' TVs are $600.

Yeah, this was to be expected. Saw it myself when i played FFXIII on PS3 with my old SDTV, i didn't even realise the running things on the level up menu were numbers :lmao:

Old tube TVs are on their way out, replaced with LCD, LED and plasma TVs that don't last half as long. That's the future for you

Low end 720p flat screens start at around $99 US for a bare-bones minimum HDTV and you can get a halfway decent one for under $199.

Find one with an HDMI input (to future proof your purchase and to enhance you ability to enjoy blu-ray movies) and an optical out if you have a surround sound system and you will be good to go.

Assuming one who owns a SDTV is playing in a small room such as a bedroom, an HDTV like this one will suit its purpose well: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=hdtv&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=0Uv&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=np&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&biw=1680&bih=897&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=11508010293362377806&sa=X&ei=vlS9TuSQK4Tk0gHMh4zXBA&ved=0CPMBEPMCMAM

I loaned my friend my 46" LCD TV because I felt bad for him every time I watch him play on his tiny SD TV. He'd have his face pressed up to the screen all squinty eyed trying to read the text. The Assasins Creeds were terrible.

He's a happy man, and the kids love it to.

Sadly OP I doubt this is something they will look into, but I'll cross my fingers for you.

For the record I don't expect it to be resolved. But I wanted this post to serve as a warning to other SDTV customers.

HDTVs are pretty ridiculously cheap now. In fact, I haven't seen an SDTV on sale in years and years. I even tried to buy one about 3 years ago and couldn't find anyone selling them.

But I understand the OP being on a budget - but you could always do what I did. Don't buy an HDTV. Buy a computer monitor. An LCD PC monitor with an HDMI input (17" or bigger) can be had for around only $100 dollars, and your PS3 or XBOX360 will plug directly into it using an HDMI cable - no further set-up required, and suddenly you are gaming in HD 720p and 1080p resolutions for very cheap. Especially if your console already came with an HDMI cable.

I feel your pain - Dead Rising and Mass Effect forced me to give up my SDTV gaming due to the small text - but that was years ago. Unfortunately time and technology marches on. HDTVs were introduced over 12 years ago, and there comes a time for every industry or business to decide when to stop supported old technologies. Bethesda obviously decided that time was now for them.

Take my advice and use a PC monitor instead of an HDTV. It will save you a lot of money and give you the same beautiful end result. I thought my games looked fine on my old SDTV, but going back to that after getting used to HDTV feels like some smeared Vaseline all over the screen. Skip a couple of game purchases and invest in going HD. You'll appreciate the difference and all your past and future games will look better.

This game is like unplayable without and HDTV. Just got it. Hard to read stuff because they did that HD [censored] like Mass effect. Can hardly see any small details on Character maker. The HP and bars like that are cut mostly off screen. There is no screen Adjust! I can live without reading but the stat bars and other stuff cut off screen?
