Other than the role playing aspect, what's up with food? The regenerative aspects are almost nil - a simple restoration spell or heal potion will heal more than a barrel of cabbages and apples.
While food has a good weight/price ratio, you have to pick up a mountain of tomatoes to get much money from them.
Is there something about food that I am missing?
Also, is there a search tool on this forum? I can't find one.
I do not bother picking or cooking. At first I thought I could use them in alchemy, but it seems they are useless. Also you need too much ingredients to make a "food".
The best food I have found is the apple and cabbage stew.
I had hoped to find more cooking recipes for better food out in the world, but so far I havent and Im lvl 30+
So I have stopped using food alltogether as it is useless. Like survival in New Vegas.
Nice idea. Terrible implementation. No idea what these people were thinking, but I dont have the encumberance to carry around something that weighs 1 and only heals 5 hp.
i burn through food. pots are expensive, and i run out of them alot. theres some stews you can make that heal 10/10 hp stam, and the big cheese wedges heal 15 hp. obviously outside of combat you can just regen, or use heal magics (if you arent a wizard)
and ofcourse its for decoration/RPing. im suprised they didnt add a hardcoe mode like in NV, considering skyrim is a relatively rough climate, but its an interesting feature that had to be modded in previous titles. i always thought it was ridiculous that bread was an "alchemy" ingredient.
I have been a wandering cook, food critic and writer since I first landed in Morrowind (there was no food in Daggerfall). My book "A Feast for Free" - published in Morrowind sold not too badly and I am working now on the follow up "A Frozen Feast for Free" (free to the first person who makes a good mod with more recipes in).
I have heard rumors of another person in Skyrim who makes their living through writing about food and I intend to track them down. I won't have some Nord muscling in on my patch!
For the people who play a character that uses no magic, food is an alternative to using spells for healing. Its also handy if you run out of potions clearing a ruin or fort, and haven't raised your alchemy yet. I am glad, however, that you don't *have to* rely on it.
Food and alcohol have saved my ass in this game more than a couple times. And yeah, great roleplay value. Here's to hoping someone will make a mod similar to "Necessities of Morrowind" in the future.
Seems like a leftover mechanic after trying (and failing) to add New Vegas' hardcoe mode into Skyrim. Guess they couldn't be bothered to call Obsidian.

"Necessities of Morrowind" (2) were the publishers of my book bless them
I hope someone does a mod just like that because it is still the best ever mod made in my humble estimation.

This ladies and gentlefolk is why they put food in. Awesome.

Oh it's definitely up there on my list. NoM and Vampire Embrace are two examples of the kinds of mods I want for Skyrim. Probably unlikely but hey, I can dream.
some of the food stews u can make improve your hp regeneration by allot for like 300 seconds, but yeah im still not motivated to cook them, maybe if they were 1 hour buffs
One of the reasons I didn't use a "food & rest" mod in Oblivion was because it was often tied to having to sleep every 24-36 hours, and with Oblivion's leveling system that was unacceptable.
However with Skyrim there are no drawbacks to sleeping so I am looking forward to some good "realism" mods that require food, drink, and rest.

ps. And hopefully a slight boost in food effects -- I would keep the ingredients the same but make cooked food triple the effect it is now.
