No footprints in snow.

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 3:39 am

Am I the only one who's not seeing my footprints in the snow? Please don't tell me that they didn't add this in the game, because even WoW has footprints... I'm running everything on Ultra on the PC.

I walked up a set of stairs with a light dusting of snow. I turned around to see if my footprints were there... /disappoint

I thought this game was revolving around a whole winter theme, and they didn't put footprints in the snow in the game?

Would be more annoying to make than useful to players who will stop caring after a minute or two, and quite probably annoying to modders who will want to change the textures.

Quite dissapointing to be honest.
I know this takes up some powa, but its an essential graphical implementation since it adds so much to the athmosphere.
This is a bad mistake.

Apparently, it's up to modders to "finish" the game for the PC crowd.

That's the reason Bethesda pisses me off at times.

They ship out an incomplete game and make the modders finish it. As others have said it seems like there was absolutely NO beta testing hours clocked for this game at all.

Bethesda has problems.

Or maybe it's just a problem with the engine? Go to Riverwood and take a look at the river shoreline and you'll see what I mean, it looks tacky. It's hard to explain but basically the engine works in a certain way and I just guess characters feet can't make footprints in the floor.

Did they have foot prints in Oblivion - I can't remember - I can only assume not.

Not that I recall, in fact, I don't remember seeing them in Fallout 3 or New Vegas either.

Exactly. People seem to assume that high graphics mean that anything is possible but it's not, there must be some programming difficulty in having textures react and change to footsteps; given that they decided to make the game in the place where it has always been said that it's pretty [censored] cold I'm sure that they never just forgot to add footprints.

Technically, footprints are easy to do on the development side, you do them the same way you do bullet hole is shooters. The easy way is to slap a sprite down where you want the footprint, there are much more advanced methods that apply textures to surfaces now.

The problem we have now is without some base code for this technology to work with already in the game it will be a pain in the ass to mod into the game if it is even possible at all.

This is kinda silly because MGS on psx that came out in 1998 had footprints in snow, surely it cant be that difficult to do. :shakehead:

I modded footprints-in-snow into Neverwinter Nights. Should be trivial to do in Skyrim

I feel like tiny things like this can make dull games much more immersing.. When games like Skyrim are to do it, it becomes amazing. Now just foot prints in the snow but all those small things like trails in the water and so on anything that may seem small can make the game a million times bigger in my eyes and I think you'll all agree a lot of players feel the same.

I really hope small things like this get implemented with mods or even better patches.

I agree.

Also would really make hunting much more fun if wild animals near by left foot prints.

How can you call a game unfinished merely because there are no tracks in the snow? How entitled could a person get?

I'm not complaining just pointing out what is involved technically.

Considering footprints could easily be turned off, and would fade over time just for realism, I doubt they forgot to put them in because of potential performance issues. More likely they couldn't make them look good enough on uneven ground to satisfy the art team so they scraqed then footprint thing and spemt their time on a bigger more important project.

I personally would like footprints, not for the realism, but to help if I get lost or to track an enemy that has run away. Could you imagine realistic tracking in this game?
