For AMD card users who can run this game fine, your help nee

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 8:39 pm

Ok I posted this here because I have a question for people who use AMD Radeon 5/6xxx series and run this game without a problem. Nobody goes to the support forum when they can run the game fine:P

Ok I have a favor to ask.
Could you please tell me what settings you are using for this game?
By that I mean:
Driver version? I use 11.11b
Crossfire off or on?
Your GPU AA settings in the CCC.
ALL your settings you have including FXAA an so on. For example you could say: AA 4, AF 8, resolution, all the things in the advanced, shadow ultra, water all ticked and so on. All that information I can use to find out what the problem is.
Your position in game. I noticed a lot of people have the same problem around Whiterun.
I dont care about your hardware as long as you use Radeon 5/6xxx series GPUs, it wont make a difference.
FOR 5770 HD users, if you could tell me the temperature your card is getting while ingame thatd be lovely.
WHAT DID YOU ADD TO THE SKYRIMPREFS.INI FILE?

And finally the reason why im asking this.
I have a problem of the game going into a black screen, completely freezing, I cant use any shortcuts to end the process... nothing; my PC gets 100% unresponsive. I can however hear ingame souns so its not a problem. What I am trying to get to is if this problem has something to do with the game settings or if its an unfixible game error for which we will have to wait to get fixed. I dont think its unfixable because on my poll in the tech section around 25% of people are running the game with no problems so the other 75% must have something wrong with their settings. Im not sure, im just trying to get some uninterrupted Skyrim gameplay.

I haven't a clue what half the questions you want me to answer mean, but I'll try anyway.

Radeon HD6870

Driver version - no clue, latest I suppose, only installed this gfx card on the 12th of november and keeping it up to date.
Crossfire - off
GPU AA settings in the CCC - I have no idea what CCC is. I assume AA is anti-aliasing.
All settings maxed fully.
I tweaked .ini files for self-shadow on trees and objects.

Never used it.

6870 here. Starting from default "High" settings, I increased the view distance on several things, turned off AA, left AF at x8, and turned on FXAA. No crossfire.

No mods, only .ini changes are for mouse speed and turning on self-shadows for trees. Driver is.... whatever it prompted me to download last week or earlier this week?

Runs fine.... well, ran fine before 1.2. Had to revert using downloaded 1.1 files, and now I've run into a small number of missing textures (purple Ice Trolls and Dwemer chests).

No idea about my FPS, don't have Fraps. Seems fine, but then I've never had "OMG, it just dropped 2 FPS from 120, how can people stand this crap!?!?!" standards, so......

Hey there, I'm running Skyrim on an OC'd 5770 (Core Clock: 930 mhz / Mem Clock 1300 Mhz) Not sure what driver version I'm running but I'm pretty sure its the 8.902-111012a (which is the most up to date, don't know where you guys are getting 11.XX x_ x). I don't have any crashes or freezes (knock on wood) that pertain to the video card I believe. I did have a couple of CTD's when I first started but I am pretty sure that had to do with a sound card bug with the 7.1 surround but have had zero since I fixed that with a few tweaks. Anyways, The hottest I have seen my card get with my custom fan settings is 71 C (it did get up to 100 C one time because I forgot to turn on my custom settings, I was freaking out pretty bad when I noticed it. x_ x). I have everything on ultra and all the draw distances maxed. Running 8xAA and 4xAF with no FXAA. As for the CCC, Tesselation is AMD optimized, Texture filtering is set to max with surface format optimization, mipmap is max, Vsync is always on, AA mode is multi sample and triple buffering is on. I run a steady 60 fps. Lastly, the only thing I've changed in the .INI is the combat log to disable the auto-aim, nothing visual (although I might try some of the graphics fixes soon). Hope this helps.

How the hell are you running 60 fps with these settings at 1080 with a 5770. Ive got mine OC'd to 930/1300 on 1366x768 (natural res on my 32" LCD) and you can see my setting in my last post. Anything above them my frame rate plummets, I'm calling BS or you have some kind of godly 5770.

What CPU are you running?

I have similar ingame settings (4xAA, 16xAF, 1080P, high textures, etc.), but I only get 60+ FPS outdoors or interiors. Most cities drop me into the 30s, and parts of Markarth drops me below 20. I'm on an overclocked 5870...

You may want to Bookmark these. So if you ever need them or need update em later. But this is how I got my Skyrim to run smoother.
where before FPS was very very low.. Now its playable.

My Laptop.. Not even Gaming Laptop:
Asus N61Jq i7 CPU quad core 1.7 - Ghz - Boost to 2.9 Ghz
4Gb Ram
ATI Radeon 5730 1 Gb Ram CCC video drivers 11.11b
Win 7 64 bit.

CCC settings:

Smoothvision: Use Application Settings
Tessellation: Application setting ( unchecked AMD Optimized as I've hurd this cause FPS drop and crashes for Skyrim)
Catalyst AI: Quality /Enable Surface Format Optimization
Mipmap Detail Level: Quality or High Quality. (default should be high Quality but can turn down to Quality see if it helps)
Wait for vertical Refresh: OFF (Turn this off)
Anti-Aliasing: Performance ( Do not slide this up higher as I've hurd it cause more crashes/drop in FPS)
You will need to install a few mods to make your game run smoother For ATI Radeon users..

If your Win vista/ 7 64 Bit... You need this In order

1) Get the 4gb Patch fix from here - Get the manual install. Copy all files right into skyrim folder.. Make shortcut to your Desktop.
Also may want make Shortcut to SkyrimLauncher on your desktop too, So can configure video settings.
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1013

2) Download the manual d/l of AntiAllias and Sharpen effect With installer for novice users.. Install.. Run Exe and point to Skyrim folder
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21

3) Post Process Injector 1_3 Manual Install.. Run Exe and point to Skyrim folder
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=131

4) get the ATI Fix For 4GB Skyrim And 11-11B Drivers ( May need this if 4 GB does not load)
You will just copy this into Skyrim folder also.. Again use Manual download and just drag and drop..
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2182

5) and last you'll need Beta Scrip extender. As this preview construction set that is to come. This also fixes few Resistance bugs..
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1288179-wipz-skyrim-script-extender-skse/

Now Re-run Skyrim Launcher.. It should detect your video card now..
Pic your resolution.

Skyrim Setting

I have my set at High.

Antialisting : 4 ( Try 4 if jerky, Try setting this 2)
Anistropic Filter : 8 ( 8 or lower should be fine)

I turned down the Blur Qaulity to Medium left rest at High
and uncheck marked alll for the water.. Water detail can eat up a lot FPS. but you can experiment if you wish
As for distances. I've had at full and try default. Does not seem be much change.
Hope that helps. It helps me..

Oh run the 4GB.exe to play the game. Not threw Skyrim Launcher as this make/allow Skyrim use all memory on
your system and seems improve frame rate..

Specs:

Intel Core i7 3.4GHz dual-processor quad-core

8GB DDR5 RAM

ATI HD 5770 1GB @850MHz GPU clock/1375MHz memory clock

1920x1080

60 FPS with the settings I posted. Swear to god.

EDIT: Also note that when running AA with 8x samples it is EXTREMELY demanding for an HD 5770. Since I have a large resolution of 1920x1080, I don't really need AA so I keep it low at 2x samples. Dramatically increases my performance.
