XP for killing mobs vs. quests

Post » Mon Dec 16, 2013 8:54 am

Just wondering... what is so bad about gaining XP for killing mobs, that nowadays in most MMOs questing is the only viable way to gain XP?

From my point of view, questing feels restricted and linear... anybody doing the same quests (solo most of the time, because quests are so easy that you just don't need help)... you just run from quest hub to quest hub.

Why we can't have the freedom to just go out into some outlying area to kill some mobs and be actually rewarded for doing so? I talk about taking some risks, exploring areas on your own, and not because your quest journal is telling you to do so.

I had hopes that TESO would be different

In wow, you got more xp and better rewards for quests, note that most quests involved killing mobs so you got this double. One difference in ESO is that exploring will be rewarded.

Because killing a mob takes less time and skill than certain quests.
But harder to defeat mobs should definitely give more XP than an ordinary quest, Imo

I like the idea of farming mobs especially if they are super hard. You have to single out mobs that are separated form the pack. Or team up with other adventures to slay them.

the players asked for more quests so wow made it so you could quest from creation to cap. before wow mmo games were mostly grinding out level by killing the same mobs on loop. i personally have had fun with both systems though the grinding for xp system requires fun combat to work. questing can mask sub par combat imo

That made me think and I have to agree...

Personally, Ihad the most fun while leveling more "grindy" games, where fights against mobs were actually quite hard and sometimes could even turn out bad... and where you were better off when you grouped up.

Today everything seems just so easy (too easy).

go kill x mobs type A - check

get reward - check

go kill y mobs type B - check

and so on...

But who decided that it has to be like that? Why can't encounters be hard and even include the risk to die? PvE in ost modern MMO can be played semi-afk

Nothing, its actually a fun way to level for some of us. WoW just happened to lean away from that so a few other MMOs followed suit because that's how we do things in the MMO industry lately.

Time investment per xp should be about equal for both, I think.

That said, quests are only fun once, maybe twice if there are interesting choices or paths along the way. However, mob killing based around a great combat system can keep you entertained for much, much longer.

There is no skill involved in doing any quest, especially not MMO quest. The main reason you see Quest favored over Mob Killing is due to instanced farming via bots.

Because if mobs would give more xp in a way that it would become a viable leveling method, it would encourage grinding. People would find ways to powerlvl and to find exploits on how to kill as many mobs as possible. I think the devs would prefer if people saw the content they put their time in. They should definatelly give xp, but not more than quests.

Easy solution is to make quests have a bit more exp. Seems fair considering grinding is constant, continuous exp flow while quests have travel time and story elements that don't involve killing mobs to consider. Roughly they should be about equal for time invested if you use this method and get the numbers right.

Yeah, I do agree with you but for a different reason. I don't like help out NPCs in games which my character doesn't like; if I'm playing as a malevolent person then I might not want to help become the neighbourhood hero - especially if they're all going around prance about how great I am. That being said though, it's not doom and gloom since we know ZOS are putting in quests with different endings, as long as I'm not also being shoehorned into a particular disposition then I suppose to doesn't matter on the whole.

People like me are just going to click, click click and skip all dialog. I simply don't care about the most story's behind quests, mostly because their horribly written, or a rehash of previous quests. Additionally its arrogant of anyone to think their time involved in production grants a right to force it upon others, its its truly good, people will want to enjoy it.

As soon as I hit lvl 10, I'm of to Cyrodiil..

I dont mind if mobs gives me xp while I do my first ten levels, the quicker and faster I hit lvl 10, the better..

nothing is forced, you can always stop playing the game. if they feel they want you to play it a certain way then they have every right, they made the game after all.
