So, I was having horrible performance while playing Skyrim even though my laptop exceeded minimum requirements. Turns out the game was using the integrated graphics chip instead of the proper video card. To change it I right-clicked on the desktop, selected Nvidia control panel, chose manage 3d settings, then global settings and in preferred graphics processor, selected High-performance Nvidia processor. Now the game runs as well as it should
