Forum Grammer & punctuation?

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 11:14 am

Why do so many people care about punctuation and grammar for forum post?? These aren't essays... they are supposed to be free flowing conversations. But if you have a post that isn't pretty much edited by your college english professor people always troll the heck out of you. This coming from people that use twitter and text where its basicially pigeon english?? I just don't get it.

Using proper spelling and grammar helps people understand what you're trying to say. However, nitpicking about typos and minor mistakes is asinine.

If you don't make the effort to use proper grammar, spelling and punctuation, why should people make the effort to understand your post?

Minor errors are acceptable because no one is perfect. But there are some posts where they create an entire paragraph without breaking it up. Absolutely no effort in making themselves coherent.

You don't need a college professor to use at least decent grammar. That being siad, people who jump on your back for mistakes are pretty darn annoying, I'll admit. They're only justified in what they do if your post is actually incomprehensible.

Omg you spelt "said" wrong!!!1111oneoneone.

Kidding :)

It's really about readability. Punctuation is important because a wall of a text is painful to read. A wall of text would be like a person irl talking non-stop without taking a breather. The audience can't keep up.

I didn't feel like doing ALL the corrections, but there's a few.

Poor grammar is a direct affect of not having much education. Being uneducated doesn't necessarily make someone 'dumb', but it's a shame that some people don't have the ability to portray their intelligence over the internet from lack of a formal education.

not tacing time too rite werds korekly makes peeple look dum.

And frankly it's irritating. When I try to read something like that it's like trying to listen to rap; I agree some people are asses about it, but there's a fine line between a grammatical error and a trolling 9 year old.

The best way to have a free-flowing conversation IS to use proper, agreed-upon spelling and punctuation. I never call anyone out for their mistakes by the way. If there are so many that they become distracting, I just stop reading the post.

Because a lot of people feel powerless in their lives, so correcting grammar and feeling superior about the gaming pc their mom bought them is about all they got going in life.

Personally, so long as I can read it I don't care.

I actually appreciate it when people correct me on my grammar.

I don't judge people who aren't as cautious about their grammar as I am, but I do understand the people who are bothered by it.

It only really bothers me when it's obviously not out of laziness or a typo, but instead pure ignorance...

It's their, as in "I went to their house" not "I went to there house" :shakehead:

I can see that you are trying hard here to be precise and correct in your writing. I think maybe you are trying too hard. That semi-colon is a dead giveaway. Too much sizzle with no steak.

Insecure people look for any way to feel superior, correcting English one of those ways. All trolls are as a rule insecure and look for the validation of getting a rise out of you, so simply don't give them that validation and the trolls whither up and die. Hence the saying, "Don't Feed the Trolls."

If its something like mixing up effect and affect or even misspelling something like accommodation then its usually forgivable. It is the internet after all and typos are common. All of my college professors make some kind of typo whether its in the syllabus or a powerpoint.

But if you spel li3k tis, no one will take you seriously.

sometimes lack of punctuation is appropriate (as is spelling) to represent the way the typer speaks (such as i hardly ever stop to breath if i actuall get into a conversation) and accent (i am from the south, not that it reflects my typing much, other than trying to sound smarter than i really am sometimes  )

like i would talk like this in real life in a long never ending sentance untill some random person interupts me or untill my thought is over of course i try to show some punctuation on the forums because those grammer nazis dont take kindly to putting to much of yourself into your musings fun fact this is how poetry is wirtten because in english commas and periods are stops and breaks in a sentance and poetry does not break that much of course it does not go along this long either so maybe i should shut up now :teehee:

^^^that is an example of free form poetry, my excuse for having crappy grammer
