I was just thinking that all the forums that i go to always have some kind of advancement system, here in the bethesda forums you get more stars, and you can also customize your profile, so does that make the forums some sort of rpg?

Because posting just to gain "levels" is a very good way to have your post count reset to zero and earn a warning here.

People earn their merit by the quality of their posts, not the quantity.

In the forums you are yourself. There is no 'role'. An rpg is all about playing as someone else.

if we all played ourself we would all use our real names and our faces as the profile picture, and nobody does, therefore i do think that we are all playing a role.

A forum isn't a game. It's a form of communication. If there's anything in an MMO to compare it to, it's the chat box.

And just to go back to the stars for a second, that's actually something I wish would go away. Not just on this forum but on all forums. It's a pretty pointless addition that just encourages pointless posting.

exactly what i was thinking, why do they always encourage you to post more by adding some sort of advancement, it's a game.

No, normally people post because they have something to say. The people who play this "game" you're talking about are called spammers.

They don't encourage you at all. The ranking system is just a way to signify total posts but nothing more.

i bet that most people judge the posts by how many stars that profile has and if they liked the picture on the side, if this was truly about communication that wouldn't be a factor.

I judge posts on the content, most of the time I forget the stars are even there. Most people probably feel the same way.
