FRAPS recording - low FPS since upgrading

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 4:06 am

Hey guys,
I had a HD 4850, and used to record videos of Skyrim and other games with FRAPS at a pretty decent framerate (25-30 mostly). I upgraded my card to a GTX 560Ti, however when I try to record using FRAPS, I get around 5-10fps. Nothing apart from my GPU has changed (the same happens even when I lower my graphical settings). I have the latest beta drivers.

Anyone have any idea?

Go into your games and see if the shadow quality got flicked on for some reason. If it has, turn that crap off.

That's all I got.

Unfortunately the settings are the same and I still get really low recording FPS.

Probably not the issue, but worth a look: Check the video capture settings on FRAPS to make sure it's not recording and locking your FPS at 15 or something.

FRAPS tends to affect your fps when recording, so I'd imagine it's the fault. Ponder around with the settings.

Update FRAPS maybe? Just a thought.

what's your frame rate without FRAPs running?

Have you tried the stable (non-beta) drivers?

Have you tried rolling back one major revision for the driver?

What are your FRAPs settings? I have Fraps set to lock at 30fps when recording, half size (rig on my profile). Did you change it to "Force lossless RGB capture"? That'll kill framerate.

Just a quick update.

I was searching google for the issue and came about a YouTube video where they suggested changing the affinity of FRAPS to just one core. I've got a tri core processor so I set Skyrim running on all three as normal (as it doesn't really utilise the third well) and just limited FRAPS to the third. I was able to record a two minute test dragon fight video, in full 1080p resolution with only a few minor framerate drops (25-30) every now and then.

So, great news :D
