Frequent freezing

Post » Sun Jan 16, 2011 12:13 am

I have been playing FONV for over a week now and more and more frequently I am experiencing the game freezing up and requiring me to reset my PS3 console. While playing the game it jitters quite often and regularly freezes completely, is this just a bug I have to life with or is there something I can do. I would be extremely grateful for some advice, incidentally I'm new to the genera and love it so I rushed out and bought FO3 goty edition and played an hour or two on that without any such problems. Just to add I've tried deleting the game and reinstalling it to no avail!

I also have been experiencing a lot of freezing up. I installed the new patch and it still freezes up. I think their is no hope for this game. svcks because i really like the game it is just unplayable and I dont want it to ruin my PS3. Maybe the next patch will fix the freezing.

I had some serious issues with my game (I would load it up sometimes and where the game appears on the XMB menu it would say "corrupted data", sometimes the autosave warning would be a jumbled mix of code) so I went into safe mode (google it with ps3 forums) and restored the file data, which gets rid of any corrupt files on your ps3. next disable all autosaves and create new game data instead of overwriting it EVERY time you do something important/ are about to do somethig important. I'm not sure if it helped but I disabled the ambient music (just turn music all the way down in the settings) because it changes when your being attacked, which requires sudden loading while it's trying to process other things already. don't use VATS with lever action firearms(cowboy repeater), especially in tight spaces. you may also want to turn the killcam to off, it's the slow-mo VATS death that happens without using VATS, usually when your killin the last member of a group of enemies. also when your save begins to get in excess of 10 mb, it's been known in F3 and NV that you will experience severe freezing/glitching. restoring the file system again may help, but could possibly get rid of save files that are corrupt.

since the new patch I was able to finish an extremely buggy playthrough with only 2 freezes that occured when I loaded it for the first time, so I think the game was just trying to get used to the patch. also I started a new playthrough prior to the 1.02 patch, and I haven't had any freezing issues over the past 10+ hours of play. what I suggested may work, may not work. everyone has different issues because of the vastness(if that's a word) of the game.

I just did this quest post 1.02 patch and it worked for me. But then again, I'm only 12 hours into the game and my save file is 4mb.

I hear the new elder scrolls is going to use the same one, but I've also heard Fo4 will use a new engine so I was happy about that I like Fallout more then TES anyway :fallout:

Only 2 freezes in one play through? That's crazy that's roughly 40 hours only 2 freezes I'm impressed I might consider playing NV again and trying all this. Well maybe once another patch comes out just for safe measure. I honestly don't mind most bugs. My beef is with the freezes I just want to be able to play the game without worrying if its going to crash and brick my PS3.

sorry, slight misunderstanding.

I was able to finish a playthrough I had started pre patch, and it had been really glitchy but now it seems ok, there's a bit of lag when loading triggers/scripts etc. but it's a lot better than before. I was completely unable to play it pre-patch

I had started another playthrough just a couple days before the second patch and I didn't have any problems before or after the patch, been playing maybe 20 hours altogether and the only time it's froze is when I first loaded the playthrough, although I think that's because the game was suddenly trying to get used to too many new things at once from the .02 patch. I could be wrong, just my speculation.

glad to hear it(your gameplay experience, not the whole father/soul stuff lol), you can experiment with some of the settings that you would have rather kept on to see if they work, I just started turning off everything I could think of that would require unnecessary loading. I think one of the major problems with fallout is it is tying to load too much at the same time, the PS3 only has a RAM of about 2 GB, so it can process max 2 GB of information at a time, and that's kind of pushing it.

Well, Hey if you figure out a way that severely limits the freezing/crashing let me know! I have more faith with people tinkering with it than Obsidian or Bethesda at the moment...

yeah, Bethesda told me they've escalated my issue to the "next level of support" after a good week of sending e-mails back and forth trying to properly explain my issue. I haven't heard back from this next level of support for a good 3 weeks now.

problem is, theirs only so much tinkering you can do on a console game. as much as I love the series, I think it should have stayed strictly PC so we wouldn't have these problems. the benefits of fallout on PC are enormous compared to console. what do they even have? oh, right, more money, cuz Microsoft bought exclusivity rights to DLC, yet again.

Yea, I'm going to use your idea as a spring board here he he Why not release future Fallout/ TES games to PC exclusively let them mess with it then send it out to consoles when the PC community has modded it up and not so glitchy its not that easy though is it... Can't send the computer data to the consoles with out doing this and that and blah blah a bunch of technological stuff that's over my head only thing even remotely close to any kind of coding or programming crap I've ever had was some basic HTML.

yeah, I can understand it's a completely different process, but maybe that's why they should stick to PC. a lot less trial and error and more happy customers, cuz they can get updates from the community, who know how to better implement Bethesda's engine then they do, apparently

I downloaded the 1.02 patch the other day and for about a day or so I played without any freezing or even "jittery"/pausing issues. But now it's all back. It pauses and then releases, it freezes so I have to reset and it even restarted itself. The screen went black just after coming out of the top door of Contreras' shack at the back of McCarren, then the PS3 "intro" screen appeared as though I was just turning the console on. It's frozen two other times since then.

I've also experienced other intermittent issues which the patch didn't seem to resolve at all, like companions disappearing and reappearing, getting "stuck" in areas where you can see the map disappearing... it's really just annoying, especially when you lose data.

This has happened to me a few times, try the tips i listed on another topic i started, it's called "for people having freezing issues..."(i think) after doing all that i've had a much better playing experience. My game was at the point where i would go and put it into my sytem, and if the PS3 didn't automatically spit it out it would just say "corrupted data" where the game is supposed to appear on the XMB menu.
