A friendly discussion about Phyics

Post » Wed Jun 19, 2013 12:23 am

After seeing some in-game footage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eT0dRYzUMo8 ) i am realizing
how important phyics were in Skyrim for me.
Especially when fighting I miss the feeling of impact. Especially there is a part in the vid where the guy kills an animal.
There was no impact whatsoever, it just felt and....dead.
To my surprise I realize that this really feels missing yet.

What do you think about it? I know there are good reasons NOT to implement it. I am not saying: "It needs 2 b there I wont buy this pease of c***"...
I just would like to think about where a phyics-Engine would be problematic.

Also while researching about that I read that:
http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,1034123/The-Elder-Scrolls-Online-Improved-effects-with-DirectX-11-Exclusive-Tech-Interview/News/

Q: Do you utilize PhysX, Havok or another middleware or do you program your own physics libraries?
A: We use Havok.

which actually surprised me. Have you seen anything like physics somewhere? Could you imagine they implement it later? Or is there absolutely no way to manage that?

I mean: Why not phasing the physics, so nobody have to see my cheese-wheel-castle?

Isn't the physics-calculation unrelated to the server, could it be completely client-wise?

Could there be parts of the game it would work and others, where they could just disable it?

What about the castles in PvP: They said they will make them destroyable...

Do you care anyway?

If there is a thread about that somewhere, just point me there...

I think there's a lot they haven't put in yet..including physics tuning. I imagine at this stage in the game it isn't that important

I agree. But do you think it is possible they might put it in later?

I hope they do add it, personally. I want to run across someones corpse after I kill them and take massive damage, or watch them fling across the horizon.

I would like to see some sort of Physics added in, but it cannot possibly be like skyrim, so make sure we're all keeping a realistic expectation :P

You can't drop item on the ground in ESO, so you can't build a castle out of .

Usually, for MMO the only physics that can be run client side is "cosmetic physics" or say otherwise something animated with havok that has no real action on (or said otherwise "that does not modify) the game world for everyone else.

If a "real physic event" is affecting the game world (and so for every player) it will be triggered by the server and then just rendered by the client.

You can't practically have the same physics than in Skyrim for example where you can bump and move objects around in a MMO architecture with the number of simultaneous entities generating their own physic interaction, the latency issue and the calculation cost for the server, since every of such physic calculation would have to be done server-side for obvious integrity issue.

There has been video of castle walls breaking up in pieces So it's in the game already.

True. I neither meant a Skyrim-copy.

Just some small things, starting from moving grass, to falling objects, killing non-mobs with some impact...

It would be like icecream for my immersion.

So the more I think about it...they have more than 9 months and I am sure they want it too...there may be something like that in

the future, especially considering that it may be lower on their priority-list, so work on it may start later.

Makes sense, I agree. But why not "instance" parts of the phyics so they can be calculated only for me client-wise. I know this would be weird, but I still feel like it would help the immersion.
Arguments against that?

I agree! They have time... it's important.

If this MMO doesn't launch near-perfect, it will be another sad song for MMO developers.

If they only affect you and that such physics are purely for the visual part, or purely acting something that will not give you any advantage then it's fine and possible. It's basically including an instanced single player aspect into the game that has no effect whatsoever for MMO part of the game when you leave the instance.

Else it opens the game to cheating as client will be hacked to take control of the physics as way to obtain illegitimate advantages.

Better start singing then. No mmo launches on a "near-perfect" state

It's going to be a dumbed down version of Havok, it's an MMO. They wouldnt use physx, thats idiotic in an MMO.

Oh yeah, that mess of a game. That's a prime example of what not to do in any MMO, FPS or RPG.

PhysX is good for things such as spell FX visuals, when for example you want the spell particles to bounce of the environment

It becomes an issue for GPU where there is 100 spell casters in front of you playing the fireworks game, on top of the rest of the 3D scene going around.
