Full immersion Virtual Reality only 20 years away?

Post » Sun Jun 17, 2012 12:57 pm

According to Ray Kurzweil in this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrsQ4X0Y2jk

So it will be full immersion virtual reality within the nervous system (all your 5 senses), think of video games then! His predictions seem to be on track, just this year we've had those Google Glasses shown, suppose it depends if the trend takes off.

Technological innovation such as those mentioned in the video always excites me. I think there's alot of potential to connect our own bodies and our senses to the internet and virtual realities in the future, and I'm pretty sure it's going to happen at some point. When that day comes I'll gladly try it out.

Another concept that interests me is the thought of putting nanobots into your bloodstream so that they can work inside your body. It wouldn't be crazy to predict that 100 years from now it would be mandatory to inject these small bots into our bodies.

I don't think that's very likely, but at the same time it isn't impossible. At one point in the technological advancement the virtual reality might be so realistic that we can't seperate the real world from the simulated one, and if enough senses are engaged during the simulation it wouldn't be unlikely that we would be experiencing similiar mental situations as those who've actually been in war.

I'm pretty sure it depends on wheter the shooter would be realistic or arcade'ish, and the fact if we should be able to feel physical pain or not during the simulation.

Some people now have problems with becoming addicted to games and being unable to return to reality properly, so I imagine a full virtual reality will accelerate that problem and affect others who didn't have addictive personalities before.

Personally I'm more interested in the implications it would have on training and simulation than entertainment.

Better surgeons, pilots, etc.

I'm far more interested in the entertainment side of it. Though i believe genuine education would be needed to teach people between reality and simulation (people are dumb). Otherwise you would have people never leaving the simulation and their real body just being a shell. Maybe teach children in school from a young age?

That would be awesome! But if it became too realistic how would you be able to distinguish between what is real and what is not real?
Like how you could believe this world is a virtual one and you just need to figure a way out of it (this involves a bullet, I think)...

No but it will lead to a reduction in the market for prostitution.

I fear how the current trend of buggy new releases would affect such a game.

I like to tell you a moment in CoD:MW3 that would have made a good getting PTSD moment, while me and TTT where playing domination the other team was hitting our team with C-130's Osprey Gunners, Attack Helicopters and the ground troops where mopping the floor with us----it was digital hell.

I really, really, don't want to smell dead, bloated corpses or other vile smells while I'm playing a game. No....not at all. Thanks, but no thanks.

There may not be vile smells at all, or you could disable them or whatever. It would be pretty great to be playing a game like Skyrim and actually feel like you are breathing that cold mountain air and be able to actually touch the plants and flowers etc.

Virtual reality, in its very term, can never substitute reality.

Besides, every videogame ever made has its restrictions, and being connected to these restrictions will cause a severe break in the immersive capabilities of virtual reality. It will always be a simulation, never a substitute, and it will always have restrictions as long as the A.I. isn't inherently human in behavior and nature.

You could make your brain think it's reality though. I'd imagine true VR would be somewhat like a dream state, not something you can use while being conscious of your surroundings like special eyewear.

I don't want this. Seem like there would be to many problems.

-Price. The Tech might be possible, but most people won't be able to afford it. Maybe even for more than a decade or so.
-Development. It seems that games today take very long to develop. Add in an extra dimension and thats much much more work. Not to mention the cost would be astronomical. These factors and more will lead to lack of games for it.
-Motion. This and gamers just do not mix. I doubt that the "casuals" will be willing to spend the astronomical amount for it.
-Gimmick. Thats pretty much the extent of it. IMO, its unnecessary. We can only see one viewpoint at a time, so having more just seem superfluous.

It just takes away everything I like about gaming.

A (relatively) cheap way to spend my freetime relaxing and still have fun.
