Gambling minigames in the new GECK

Post » Thu Dec 30, 2010 8:28 pm

So, I believe it was announced a while back that there'd be a new version of the GECK for modding New Vegas, and it got me wondering: would we be able to make new gambling minigames? For example, if I wanted (just off the top of my head, not that this would be a very good casino game) to make a mod that allowed you to play Old Maid or Solitaire, or better yet, http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Tragic_the_Garnering, would it be possible?

Or is this one of those things that's hard-coded into the game?

Be great to have a mod for a craps game. Play anywhere.

First gambling mod - Game Man Portable, with Blackjack cartridge!

xD

Of course, I'd love to see mods that (if it's not vanilla) add "casual" games to bars and trade posts and stuff. And of course rebalance mods are going to giggle with glee that they are probably going to get to dabble with gambling settings. I look forward to the spew of mods, and maybe making a few of my own.

I hope they aren't hardcoded, but correct me if I'm wrong, weren't the other minigames already hardcoded in Fallout 3? Or at least, I didn't see anyone that messed up with the basic minigames, at most they bypassed them with skill checks or gave an alternative.

Good question... Hopefully a dev sees and responds... I think it will let you make games.. Caravan is supposed to be a new game, so the functions for building your own set of rules could very well be available... A mod that created an entire deck of Tragic cards (including illustrations) and the ability to play it would be righteous.

I think stuff like hacking was hardcoded actually, which has me worried about gambling.

The gambling I'm sure is run off of some unhardcoded things. You could probably make your own game, just you would have to make all the animations for it and such yourself. As for the actual rules and how it calculates everything, not sure. That could be hardcoded, but if they took the time too, they could also make a system that would allow you to set it up in the geck. So it could be either.

I think they said that the programmer that did the card games had previously (recently?) come from doing that professionally (coding gambling games).

It's my guess that the minigames might actually be 3d model menus like the Pip and terminals... (if true), that would make this a rather involved task.
I would also guess that you might run afoul with the animation of cards & dice (some of that might be hard coded).

~Still... this might be really fun to investigate. The Witcher dice game really was super cool wasn't it.

(I wonder if they actually use Havok on the roulette ball? Probably not ~certainly not, if the Luck stat affects winning)

Pinball! Everybody loves pinball. And in-game pinball is better than Windows pinball!

Are you actually ditching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYgbG2VrAy4 game that got me entertained for hours back in the 90's? :D I love that game more than any pinball I've ever played... even the Hulk Hogan ones you find at outdoor cinemas. :P

I do wonder as well what we'll be able to modify regarding the minigames. The model textures of course but otherwise, it might be hardcoded like the rest of the minigames.
