Game is easily distracting

Say you're working on a certain quest, whether it be a main quest line or just a side quest, and you have to travel (by foot or horse) to get to a certain place. You come along a town that you discover and there are plenty of quests to do here. Do you explore the town and do side quests or do you just move along with what you were doing before?

I am finding it hard to move along, because I'm thinking that perhaps i will forget that this out in nowhere town is here.

This is exactly what happens to me. I as telling my girlfriend that I could play this game for hours and not even touch the main quest. I could probably boast that I could play for hours without touching any named quests, and still be telling the truth.

Visit the town, find the quests -- then move on.

Exactly. Pick up the quests (they stay in your journal so you can do them later) and continue on with what you were doing. When you finish that, then maybe come back and do those quests. I don't know if there is a limit of quests you can have in your journal.

Not only that, but there's all the ruins, caves, etc to explore. But that's what I love about the Elder Scrolls games, the freedom to play the game any way you want. Early in the game, I like to get distracted exploring all the little towns, caves, etc that I come across. It's a great way to find loot that I can sell to raise money for better weapons and armor. And don't get me started on Alchemy! I'm an ingredient gathering machine. Making potions is another great way to make money.

Nah, my character is the driven/focused type. If he gets a particularly important quest it'll take precedent over the smaller ones. Won't stray from the path 'til the deed is done.

I would explore the town, see what the atmosphere is like, perhaps pick up 1 or 2 quests, but I'd still focus on the quest I was initially on my way to complete.

Kraal gro-Urdnot's number one priority is maintaining the strength and unity of the Empire. As a member of the Imperial Legion, he feels bound by honor to complete only this task. Anything else is swept away. The Empire must be preserved if the Orcs are ever to be fully accepted amongst Tamriel.
