Game Locks Up Frequently

Post » Thu Nov 15, 2012 10:23 pm

Well before I downloaded Dawnguard the game and console would lock up only when playing for extremely long amounts of time (maybe 8-10 hours). Now after downloading Dawnguard it will freeze up randomly at any time, even if I have only been playing for 10 minutes. I think this is a known issue but I just wanted to let the devs know about this bug.

I agree. It happens with me as well, and at the most random places.
I think I've rebooted Dawnguard more than I have the game as a whole (pre-Dawnguard).

There a fix for that? ...or maybe a reason/cause to look for?

I've also been getting increased freezing, having to turn off the console and restart.

That's exactly whats been happening to me and its always at the most important part of my playthrough
It actually seems like the freezing from Fallout 3/NV was carried over into Skyrim because when add ons were downloaded for those the game would become incredibly unstable.
I'm also noticing a lot of visual bugs on any races such as eyes constantly changing colors and skin becoming black (wha...?)

If you can. play your game from the disc, not an installed copy. Those who have the game installed tend to experience more freezing/crashing/graphical errors as it's more resource intensive. These symptoms also tend to be vastly hardware related, if your HD is very full, maybe shift some things to alternate storage, make sure your unit is clean and well ventilated, etc. If your xbox predates the current generation it may struggle to play Skyrim with add-ons as the hardware just isn't up to par.

Ah, that may be my problem. I run almost all of my games installed to the HD. Also my hard drive is running a little full because like I said, I run all of my games from installed copies, and I think I need to find a better way to vent my xbox since it sits inside a glass cased home theater system. Thanks for the info!

I never noticed any change in the problem with the DLC, my game started freezing all the time with the 1.6 patch, and the only way to play it was to turn off autosaving. It still occasionally freezes, but no where near as much.

i have noticed a lot of freezing myself, so much so that i have stopped playing Skyrim on the Xbox. I am not going to risk damaging it turning it off all the time because it froze(thats exactly what will happen if you keep freezing it up and turning it off will damage the hardware)

its not my console thats less then a year old, i can play Dantes Inferno, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Darksiders, Call of Duty, etc for hours and never get a single freeze...so its Skyrim thats causes it.

of Course Skyrim shows all the symptoms of faulty garbage collection....that means it doesnt free memory like its supposed to...otherwise known as a memory leak...thats what causes the freezing...its a downright shame they refuse to fix it...thats pretty much the problem.

I play it on pc, but i got dual graphics cards and 16 gb of ram so its not as noticeable, but a memory leak/faulty garbage collection on a console is just the kiss of death....once the save file gets so big the garbage collection borks the game.

im selling my Xbox copy this weekend..i refuse to damage my Xbox by locking it up like that. on the pc you can just task manager kill the process without hurting your hardware..there is no such option on the 360.

its a shame i cant even finish dawnguard on any of my characters, even my level 11 assassin has freezes that just breaks it for me...its not worth having to hold the power button on my console risking hardware damage every time.

just remember, everytime you have to pull the plug or hard power off your xbox could b the last.....you can ruin a perfectly good xbox doing that....damage the motherboard in the xbox.

It's recommended by Bethesda that Skyrim is installed to HardDrive .

I once played a buggy game on a brand new PS2, I restarted the console well over 200 times due to lockups and terminal bugs, the PS2 is still going strong over 10 years later. You wait a bit before restarting, it is only if you think you can just switch it off and back on immediately you risk damage. You turn your console on and off all the time, suprisingly they do actually make them to withstand that, since they expect you to be doing it a lot. You could have just turned the autosaving off and played the XBox 360 version, it never freezes on a manual save. The occasional lock up due to loading problems is not that frequent.

Yes this has been happening to me quite often, wasn't sure if it was the dlc or the xbox.

I've got the same issue. I have to turn the xbox off. Mine freezing in particular places though. on the road around the east side of whiterun and also coming from Markarth to whiterun it freezes by the big rock. maybe it's the random events doing it. but I've redownloaded the dlc and it didnt' help. I'll try turning off my autosaves which in the menu shows as when you use the char menu, on wait, on travel. I'm hoping this fixes it because it's unplayable otherwise. I don't want to fast travel everywhere. and it even freezing doing that sometimes. I've got plenty of space on my hd. I hope they fix it soon.

p.s. not really worth 20 bucks to ruin skyrim :( not worth 20 bucks anyway.

ok still freezes. piece of junk ! I'm not going to buy anymore dlc. I'm not going to buy anymore bethesda games. junk junk junk

The only problem with freezing that I experienced was when in Soul Cairn whenever I went near those large, floating (soul gems?) or whatever that purple orb is... It would freeze for me usually after it started draining me life and after I searched whatever chest it was hovering over.
