Game not saving properly

Post » Sat Oct 31, 2015 10:52 pm

Just started this game a few days ago, the first few hours went by hassle free but then a few hours into it I noticed when I went to save in a new save game, it wouldn't add to the total number of saves it said. After checking, I realised that none of my saves from that point on actually saved (as in they just don't come up in the save/load screen), despite the game making it seem like it was fine (no error messages or notifications). Overwriting a previously working save game also just made that save game disappear completely from the list.

I've tried verifying the game cache and doing a clean reinstall, neither of which worked. I also tried using mods through Nexus to solve the issue, and downloaded NMM and NVSE, and a mod called CASM which is an alternate system of saving that's supposedly more reliable than the vanilla system, but after about 10 minutes of success with that, that stopped working too. I've taken a look at the save game directory (in My Documents), and the file extensions for these faulty save games that aren't registering are coming up as .fos.tmp, instead of the regular .fos that the working save games had. The faulty save files are also coming in sizes much smaller (e.g. 0 or 1 kb) than the regular ~2mb working files, which might lead me to believe they're being corrupted, but I'm not certain of this and have no way of confirming or preventing it if that's the case.
I can post my computer specs if needed, but I don't think that has any relevance as the game automatically set all settings to ultra when I first started it up, and I had no problems running it in the first few hours before this save problem came up. I've done a bunch of reading and tried a bunch of solutions online and apparently people playing Skyrim have reported similar issues, but I haven't found anything that's worked so if anyone has any ideas on how I can solve this please just fire away. I just bought NV to get me in the mood for FO4 when it was released, but all this hassle has really spoiled my appetite for FO so any help would be much appreciated.

Use spoiler tags for that dxdiag.

The button is right beside the font dropdown box to the left. Select spoiler and paste the dxdiag in the textbox.

Have you tried to adding FNV to your Anit-Malware exceptions list?

What anti-virus are you using?

All of my Steam games are included in a blanket exception I've set up for the steam common folder, and I'm using Trend Micro Maximum Security.

The save files in the My Documents folder are in C drive, but it being close to full is just something that happens every now and then when the free space on the drive will decrease drastically by a few gbs even though I'm not doing anything. Despite that the save problem first appeared when I had plenty of space on the drive, so I don't think it's cause of a space restriction

Where is Steam installed. Sometimes games will have issues with permissions if it is installed in the programs folders especially when you are using mods.

Also can you please clean up that dxdiag. Use Spoiler tags as described in my previous post. It makes these threads a pain to scroll down each time.

Does this save issue happen over time or immediately?

Fixed it for you Jasper, cheers. I've done a bit more testing and it seems the save issue starts happening about 5-10 minutes into a playthrough. I can do quicksaves and normal saves and all that completely fine as soon as I start playing, but by 10 minutes later the same save issue starts happening again, and it's the same deal on each session.
All of my steam files are installed on my E drive, but the save files are in the My Documents part of my C drive (which is a 64gb SSD with my Windows on it), which is presumably the default location for them cause I haven't done anything to change the directory. This issue started happening before I'd installed any mods, and my motivation for starting to use mods was to try and fix this issue in the first place.

Im gonna recommend a clean boot: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

You can leave your anti-virus enabled. Try the game after the clean boot is performed.

Have you checked the event viewer as well? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/open-event-viewer#1TC=windows-7

Look under windwos logs. Check both system and application logs. Look for anything related to FNV. You can clear them and then reproduce the issue.

Then check the logs. Just right click each log and select clear log. You dont have to save them.

Had a dig around the event viewer windows logs, there was nothing in the system log but the application log had a bunch of errors that were pretty much identical to this one.
Does this tell you anything useful? The problem history in the action center control panel was completely blank

I believe we have found our issue especially if using mods. I suggest moving the steam library out of the program files folder and move it directly to E:\Games or something like that. Windows Vista and later has over protective mode to the 2 program folders to help prevent viruses/malware from running. Some programs do not work that well in that overprotective mode, especially older games or games that use mods.

Mods will not fix problems, they create them (if not used properly)

You really need to move your My Documents. For that matter, your Temp and Internet Caches too. SSD's don't like to be written to all that many times, it wears them out prematurely. And, you clearly have space issues if your down to 1.5GB free space at anytime, even if its a temporary situation like you described. Do yourself a favor, move the following folders:

Temp Files

Create a folder on your other drive called Temp and do the following

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/change-location-of-temp-files-folder-to-another/19f13330-dde1-404c-aa27-a76c0b450818?auth=1

My Documents

Move the My Documents folder to your other drive

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/redirect-folder-new-location#1TC=windows-7

And, finally, not knowing your browsers, move the Temporary Internet Files or the Browser Cache to the other drive. Search the name of your browser and temp files to find out how to that.

In the time since I wrote that post I've cleaned up my C drive to the point where now I have 9.5 gbs of free space, but I'll implement your suggestions anyway CCNA, can't help to free up a little more. When you say SSD's don't like to be written to a lot, do you just mean you should put larger files on it, or put programs on that aren't likely to change very often?

Erz, I'm running Windows 7 so correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't that mean I'm not affected by the overprotective mode you describe?

Also, am I to understand that you both think the issue is in my save files and game files not being on the same drive? Because if that's the case, why would the error log description say FNV stopped interacting with Windows instead of being more specific to the files or folders? And why would this issue only have come up now when I've played plenty of other games that had the game and save files separated on different drives?

SSDs have a limited life span of how many times they can write their memory. This life span is pretty long and most people will not run into it for the life of the machine they are using. However, things like Temp Files and Temporary Internet Files and Browser Caches are written to many more times than any other file locations are. So it is best to move those off the main SSD. Your not going to save a ton of space by doing this, just lengthen the life of the drive. Oh, and the mechanism in Windows 7 is the Trim function that basically reduced the amount of fragmentation that can occur. That is something different, and no you never need to defrag an SSD, in fact it's not good for it in the long run.

Windows has a page file and that needs space to run, which is why you should never have a drive with the page file on it more than 90% full. Note your page file is usually on the same drive as the OS, but can be on any drive or drives in the system. But, unless you have more than one SSD, its best to have it on the SSD that your OS is on.

My Documents is the big space hog now as most programs, including games, use it for storage of data, both temporary and permanent and are used to store save files too. In addition to all your pictures and videos and documents and whatever else is in there.

Finally, it is beyond super easy to upgrade to a bigger SSD and move all your data over to the new one. I have done this a few times, even moving an OS off of a Platter Drive to an SSD. No need to reinstall anything. Most SSDs come with some kind of cloning software and it really only takes about 5 minutes to transfer your OS, Programs and data over. With SSDs now less than $100 for 250GBs, its a good time to make the change. In fact, this Crucial is only $80. Fallout 4 is going to take up 28 GB of space, and that is before you add any mods to it. So, you may want to upgrade before that comes out.

http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-BX100-250GB-Internal-Solid/dp/B00RQA6TEI/

I think I saw some 500 GB models for about $130

Then you can task the 64 GB to be a data drive and you can create a Steam Library on there and use that for gaming. Neat.

Windows 7 has UAC and a few other features that protect the OS. Program Folders is at an enhanced version of that. The issue might be the game needs to access the Registry and this system is blocking it and redirecting it to a virtual location or vice versa.

I still never install games and most programs to the programs folder especially games that I might want to mod. I find that programs and games usually run better and less prune to crashing/glitches.
