game runs great... however..

Fallout New Vegas is running smooth as butter on my system...

Intel mobo - i5 ~ 2.66ghz
8gb DDR3
nvidia 9400GT 1gb (video board is pretty low end)
Sound Blaster Audigy (don't know if this is fully supported, had to change
setting to use 24-bit audio, was broken after driver install.. =npcs no sound..)
Win7 Ult 64-bit

again, the game runs really smooth on default settings.. however..

I am getting totally random CTD no matter what I seem to be doing...
last night lost about 1 and a half hours game play... grrrr

The only message I get is the "Fallout New Vegas has encountered
a problem and needs to close" and I have to do a 3-fingered salute
and bring up task manager to close the program cuz the mouse
pointer disappears.. I can then shut it down and get back to the
desktop...

I have tried all the "fixes" the dll, tweaking all the settings..
nothing seems to make any difference... without the CTDs
the game is running really smooth... strange..

since the audio drivers at first install from the disc seemed
to be lacking some functionality, gonna try updating my audio
drivers today and see if that makes any difference..

Me too. I'd post a dxdiag but this seems to be common for this game (and Fallout 3). Interestingly, despite the issues with FO3 people were having I never experienced a single issue at all on my old desktop and laptop and I put some serious time into the game. Both had a dual-core core 2 duo and both ran Windows 7 64-bit edition (originally Vista 64-bit on the desktop though). I really think it is a multi-threading issue since quad core owners always had freezing and CTDs with FO3 and I began experiencing freezing with FO3 once I upgraded to an i7. Haven't had any freezing with NV, but have had it freeze then CTD which might be related. Hope they can find out what is causing this but no .ini setting or even largeaddressaware patch has fixed it. Save and save often :)

just an update on this situation...

well the updated audio drivers for SB Audigy actually made things worse..
after installing the new drivers the game started doing some really strange
things so I rolled back the drivers and removed the rest of the garb using
control panel... bottom line here is Audigy is not supported, gonna
upgrade audio board soon....

I also updated the graphics drivers and I now think that this is what was
going on in the first place because I just finished playing a 5-6 hour
session and everything went smooth as silk.... game ran better
than it ever has since install... no stuttering, no VATS problems,
no crashes... the only thing was a small performance hit when
around multiple NPCs, other than that pure joy... :celebration:
