Gameplay is a kaleidoscope on acid (fractals no textures)

I can move around... hear footsteps, sometimes I see sparks coming from something and a hand pops up like I could interact with some kind of object, but it's basically a kaleidoscope on acid, not sure what else I can call it... I haven't seen this much anywhere else? I started with older about 1 month old nvidia drivers.. then upgraded to current beta 285.38.

I have
quad core amd 3.0 ghz
4gb ram
windows xp
nvidia gtx 460 (1gb gddr5)

any thoughts / advice / or internet "omg why didn't you read the blah blah blah" would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Snow

EDIT:
I might also mention I can load the game fine, start a new campain, and watch the video... as soon as actual gameplay begins is when it all goes to hell. I can still pull up the menu fine.

I'm in no position to help, but first might as well ask - did you completely uninstall your previous graphics card drivers before installing the latest drivers?

I'm having the exact same problem, except I can play multiplayer with no issues.

I've got a Phenom 955 X4
4gb ram
GTX 465
windows xp

I've already gone through the whole clean out drivers and install new ones routine. Nothing seems to work. It just doesn't make sense
that it renders everything in multiplayer fine.

For those of you with NVIDIA cards, did you try enabling GPU transcoding?

I have the SAME exact issue

XP SP3
Q6600
9800GTX+
2GB Ram

Tried the latest drivers, beta drivers, gpu transcoding, screwing around with the Nvidia control panel to force settings and nothing seems to do anything.

1. Uninstall drivers completely before reinstalling? No Not yet - I will try when I get home tonight
2. Enabling GPU Transcoding makes no difference.
3. Multiplayer? I'll try when I get home.

Anyone have this issue that does not have windows XP? I may "acquire" a copy of windows 7 and try this again.

Update: Game works.

I didn't actually do anything though, same drivers.. my computer was restarted once. I checked out multiplayer which worked, then single player and the craziness is gone... not sure why?

So:
1. Restart
2. Multiplayer first
3. Singleplayer

I'll post again if it comes back..

I had this exact same problem. I did two things and now it is running great! But I'm not sure which one fixed it.

1)Save your game when you see the kaleidoscope issues. Then restart Rage, and load the save.

2)If 1 doesn't work, then I think this it's an XP/nVidia/maybe dualcore/quadcore issue, and the idtech5 autodetect not working properly. I fixed mine by following ALL of the steps from the first post in this thread:

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1237580-the-best-fix-at-the-moment/

With the following caveats/additions:

Make sure you have the latest nvidia beta drivers
Leave all nVidia Control Panel settings, including vsync at defaults, (application controlled, etc) except for enable triple buffering.
Set the seta com_videoRam correctly
seta r_useRenderThread "1"
Set the seta vt_maxPPF correctly: "8" for dual/quad core, "16" for 8thread (i7)

Also added the +vt_maxPPF to the rage launch options.

Make sure transcoding is ON in the game

Good luck!

Bump, I have a very similar problem.

On zoning from some 'inside' areas to a wasteland area, I get this same trippy kaleidoscope effect until I save the game and reload.

Most notably has happened zoning from any bandit mission area to the wasteland (ghost hidout, garage, etc), and from Wellspring to the wasteland when starting the protect-the-engineer mission.

Sample screen here: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/577810212168363385/9993AD027C2314C8BA94D5775785AB99C473B78F/

Sometimes it doesn't happen, for example zoning out into the wasteland from Wellspring via the garage seems ok every time.

Am running pretty much vanilla game configuration - no special tweaks, 4x AA, and GPU transcoding turned off (because when I turned it on it looned out my screen with blue textures!)

System specs are:

WinXp SP2
Nvidia R285.38 beta driver
Asus GTX560Ti, 1Gb VRAM
Q9650 Core2 Quad @ 3Ghz, 4Gb RAM

This bug makes the protect-the-engineer mission unplayable, because save is turned off during that mission!

Here's looking forward to a patch. ;)

Edit:

Problem still exists in the latest patch, although seems less frequent than before: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/577810212183002244/C0F270ED4E0508FABD5577822AD1E973E147DEA0/

Screen artifacts as above, GPU goes 100% usage, and only fix is to reload.

No special config in the Nvidia control panel, game settings as follows: 1680x1050, fullscreen, 4xAA, vsync on, large texture cache, low anisotropic, GPU transcoding on

(Otherwise game running nicely since last patch - almost no texture pop-in and zero tearing with above settings, although some textures look a little pixelated!)
