PC Gamer calls Skyrim curiously buggy

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 4:14 pm

"We got a review copy of Skyrim the day the game was officially finished, but it’s curiously buggy. Among a lot of minor problems such as issues reassigning controls, there’s glitchy character behaviour that can break quests, and AI flipouts that can turn a whole town against you. And the interface isn’t well adapted to PC: it sometimes ignores the position of your cursor in menus. There’s an update due as soon as the game’s out, but there’s a hell of a lot to patch here. Next time, maybe don’t commit to a specific release day just because it has a lot of elevens in it?"

Other than that, the review is mostly positive.

I would expect nothing less from Bugthesda. It'll be an amazing game, with some head-smashingly frustrating moments caused by the developers.

Typical TES launch, these games are started from scratch and are massive, there are going to be a ton a bugs no matter what. Bethesda does a good job patching their games up so I'm not worried.

Mostly positive...You make it almost sound like they disliked it. PCGamer gave it a 94%! That would put Skyrim in the top 10 of ALL the games they have ever rated! "Mostly positive" does not cut it...

I would agree with the reviewer that the PC verson needs some tweaking, but we have come to expect that from gamesas games. :)

On a more positive note, a more positive quote:
"The games we normally call open worlds – the locked off cities and level-restricted grinding grounds – don’t compare to this. While everyone else is faffing around with how to control and restrict the player, Bethesda just put a [censored] country in a box. It’s the best open world game I’ve ever played, the most liberating RPG I’ve ever played, and one of my favourite places in this or any other world."

This is Bethesda Game Studios. Of course there are bugs in Skyrim. They create the largest and most complex games out there arguably. I'd be shock if something wasn't wrong with it.

I'm sorry I didn't see the word the phrase 'horribly buggy' in that review?

Horribly buggy != Curiously buggy

If you thought Skyrim would not be buggy as heck then there is something wrong  that is great that Skyrim is getting all these good reviews, not that I doubted buying it or playing it but it does put my mind to ease somehow...

People if bugs scare/bother you don't buy ANY game on day of release.

I am not justifying bugs, I am saying that is the way it is and you need to wise up. I don't justify people breaking into a car and stealing the laptop inside but I would also say don't leave the laptop in the car with the doors unlocked in the first place. You need to protect yourself first, don't be careless then play the victim.

Quest breaking bugs would really irk me, and of all the bugs I have read about in Skyrim that is the one I am most concerned about. But I have not read any bug that would prevent me from purchasing this game.

I'm really excited for this game, but will likely wait for a GOTY release (and community patches) given Bethesda's track record with Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Nope, in 20 years of gaming it's how fast they patch stuff and problems trickling down to little if any in a short time that matters. I have yet to play a game that doesn't start with bugs, and coming from PC gamer I take a 5 pound block of salt with anything they say.

There bugs. This is a Bethesda game... nto worried at all about that stuff. If BGS doesnt patch up there stuff nice and tight, the community will ( seriously... i feel bad for you poor mother hubbered that are stuck with your xbox's and your stations of play... crappy graphics and no mods... ill think of you and weep a little while i gaze at my new, free, stuff in high-res) . What worries me is the "feel" of the game. I don't want fallout with swords... I want a freaking DnD session that had six with Idiana jones, then that baby had love-making hugs with tolkien, and the offspring of that had a baby with freaking Arnold "conan" Swarzanegger ... and Skyrim was hatched.

I've had one crash to desktop so far. Apart from that, no bugs (been playing for four hours).

I"m not surprised as this is a Bethesda game and they are well known for what was described in the OP.

Sad huh?

But despite that I bought the game knowing I'd run a high risk of seeing just this on release.

Fallout New Vegas I did not consider playable until months post release after patches and modders had a chance to repair things.

In that games case I had to put it aside for months then returned to it to enjoy it.

I won't be surprised, though greatly saddened, that that will be the case here.

I am somewhat surprised that Bethesda still saddles PC gamers with the dumbed down interface designed for the toy box crowd.

That will again, have to be fixed by the modders.

The best thing Bethesda has done , other than the core games, is make their games FIXABLE by volunteer modders and providing the tools
for them to do so. It is a bittersweet testament to how things stand.

I'll look forward to playing and will hope they fix the major issues ASAP but will not be too horribly surprised if I have to give
up in disgust for a few months until the game is ''right'. I hope that does not turn out to be the case.

Honestly, when I decided to pre-order Skyrim, I decided to accept that there'd be bugs and issues the first few weeks of the game, then gamesas would release patches and fix at least some of the worst problems. I mean, this isn't a surprise - it's been that way for every gamesas release. Why would anyone expect this to be so much different.

I hope I'm presently surprise, but also won't be terribly upset about bugs since I know they're likely.
