Games that work on a netbook

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 8:56 am

Alright so I bought a netbook for school / work etc but I would also like to play some games on it. Obviously netbooks are not gaming computers so the hardware is pretty limited... here are the specs:

Sony VAIO
29.4cm ( 11.6") LED Screen
1366x768

AMD Dual-Core E-350 / 1.6GHZ with 1MB Cache
AMD Radeon HD 6310 (Mobile)
2GB DDR3 RAM 1066MHz

I only have Plants vs Zombies and Hacker Evolution (which is surprisingly fun btw)

so I need some suggestions for games that would run on that computer ^ It would also be great if you could find them on GoG or Steam :)

Doom.
Day of the Tentacle, or any other DOS point and click game.

Terraria. It's like Minecraft, only a 2D side-stroller and it's more adventure based than building based.
There's also Crayon Physics Deluxe, it's packed with the Humble Indie Bundle and it's pretty fun :P

Beneath a Steel Sky (1994) :P

If a computer fails to run it, it doesn't deserve to exist.

I wonder if Dwarf Fortress would destroy that.

I have both Torchlight and Terraria... haven't tried them on my netbook though.

Terraria gets old really fast once you've maxed out your character :/

Doom.
Day of the Tentacle, or any other DOS point and click game.

ooh I'm definitely buying DOOM

Beneath a Steel Sky (1994) :P

I'll check it out (it's on GOG right?)

no! I am not going anywhere near that thing again. It is evil! EVIL I TELL YOU!

Torchlight has a special 'netbook mode' to further decrease the graphics quality of the game so that most netbooks should be able to run it. You might not even need the option for yours.

Terraria should get a decent update today so it'll probably be worth checking out again.

http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php and http://www.spelunkyworld.com/original.html are both nice free games with low system requirements.

http://store.steampowered.com/sub/8848/?snr=1_5_9__13 is said to be hilarious.

I have a netbook.
My specs are a little better in the RAM department, but considerably worse in the GPU and CPU dept.

That being said, I was able to handle a myriad of decent games including:

-(Old)blivion
-Portal
-Starcraft 1
-Diablo 2
-DOOM 3

I was trying to get starcraft 2 running, but I simply did not have the processing power or the GPU capabilities to do so. It would run smooth at the beginning but then began to chug once I had 10 drones on the screen.

You may wanna give some steam games a try, like TF2. The source engine is optimized pretty well it seems.

I'll check it out (it's on GOG right?)

It's freeware game that uses a program called SCUMMV as emulator.

And if you don't mind 2D graphics, I also recommend the Chzo Mythos horror game series, also freeware. They do not require an emulator.

I got Dwarf Fortress to run fine on my netbook. It takes some tweaking. You have to keep the population low (around 20) and lower max caverns to 1 to keep the z levels low. It tops out at 30 FPS but it doesn't go much below that either.

Other games that run good on my netbook are Freelancer and Diablo 2.

That's supposed to be a very funny point and click game.

I bet http://www.indiegames.com/2011/03/freeware_game_pick_the_iconocl.html would work on a Netbook.

And http://www.indiegames.com/2008/04/freeware_game_pick_yume_nikki.html for sure .

Both are freeware too, so it doesn't hurt to try them out either way.

I was about to mention Torchlight (it does have a "netbook" mode in the settings) though I'm not sure what it does

Yume Nikki looks cute, kind of reminds me of Robotrek for the SNES or Legend of Zelda

I think GTA III and Vice City would work. I read about netbook friendly games in a magazine once. Unfortunately I don't really remember too much.

Not sure if I can add to the list that has already been put up. I might recommend HL1 if it hasn't been said and probably Starwars Dark Forces. Dungeon Keeper 1 and *Maybe* Dungeon Keeper 2 would run on that machine since I can run them on my old HP that has a 900mhz processor, 500 to 750 megs of ram and a 32 to 64mb graphics card. Still svcks EA has the rights to DK and won't make any news games only thing they did with the License was let a Korean group make an MMO of it.

Atom Zombie Smasher (Available on Steam) is a really fun game and should be able to run on a netbook. Give the demo a try and see how it works.
