Gaming Keyboard compatibility?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 6:21 pm

Related to, but different from the keybinding thread, is there a way to get Skyrim to recognize my gaming keyboard's keys? I've set my gaming keys to wasd, e and space, but Skyrim still takes the keystroke as the default (as if they were function keys). I'm using a Logitech G11 Gaming Keyboard with 18 Game keys.

I don't know what you mean. If you mean that you have tried to bind non-default keys to Skyrim (like changing Use from E to F), but the game's menus still show the default binds in prompts and menus (Press E to Sell, etc), then that is apparently intended behaviour.

This is the way of it, I'm afraid. We weighed the clarity of swapping out the button help with whatever the user had mapped versus the enormous amount of video memory required to load up every possible piece of button art every time you entered the Inventory, and speed/memory won out.

And no, that decision still does not make any sense at all, seeing as they could have decided to use text instead of pictures to represent all possible keys without any performance hit (possibly less of a hit than using any pictures in the first place). But hey, that's what happens when you've got a console port.

I am using a G13 with the G-keys bound to the default keys.

Stick to the default keys in skyrim and bound those keys to your g11. I use a g13 and that works really well.

I think you hit the nail on the head, because the more I play, and the more problems I encounter, the more this starts to feel like a port of a console game.

Example: In my Game Panel, I have G9 set as E. In game, I press G9, and it thinks I'm pressing Shift.

When my G13 does that, it's because the profile hasn't been applied correctly. Usually because I alt-tabbed out of the game, and the software didn't notice me alt-tab back in. Locking the correct setting in fixes this.

Oh my, I think that finally worked! I do alt-tab out a lot since I like to have other things going on. Thank you!
