GECK Crashing on Cell Load

Post » Sat Jun 11, 2011 4:44 am

Geck keeps crashing when I try to load cells I've created. Not every cell, and not in every esp. The plugins still load and run in game (haven't tested going into the non-working cells, but other cells work fine).

The issue crops up after usually about 6-8 hours of work minimum. As much as two days work on a file before it decides to do this. The problem starts with me using geck for a few hours. I'll go to move a ref, or change categories in the object window and the window doesn't refresh correctly. An example, I double clicked a ref to change its scale, and the 3D tab showed up, but blank. I couldn't switch to other tabs, only close that window. However, after closing it I couldn't open it again. This then proceeds in a cascade effect, each action I do can be done once, then undone, but not done again. Eventually, the program just crashes.

After the crash, loading up the file in game works. Loading up the file in FNVEdit works, loading the file in GECK works. But if I try to load the cell in GECK only, the program crashes after processing nearly all the records in the cell. Thus rendering the plugin virtually useless.

Now, this wouldn't be too big a deal, except it's happened twice now, in two separate plugins, with a combined total of nearly 20 hours work. Plus, it's rather pointless to build houses (which is what I was doing) if the GECK corrupts the file before I can finish it.

The issue seems to be reproducible, after several hours work, but not something that happens to ever file, or at least it didn't used to happen to anything. Now suddenly it's happening all the time.

I'm running GECK with PowerUP Fork and NVSE. Any ides as to what's going on here? Obisidian, what's the deal now?

I have build a house, and probably have 50 hours of editing time in it. I have been making these mods since Morrowind came out in 2003(?) and know a lot of the things 'not' to do that can cause issues with a cell.

So the problem is something you are doing in the cell. And you need to actually visit the cell in game to make sure if it loads or not. That will further clarify what the problem might be.

Trying to use a 'texture set' on a furniture item always crashes the GECK and game, just to name one thing that I know not to do.
Bad scripts or broken references can also cause problems.

Well, texture sets would be it then. So what you're saying is that I'll have to make new meshes for all the objects I want. That's about the lamest thing I've heard of the GECK requiring/doing, and I've heard and seen a lot of things.

Guess I won't be making this mod as simple as I'd hoped I would be. Thanks for the info.

You copy the furniture mesh, and change the texture path to your new textures using Nifscope.
It does not do this for all furniture items, but it did for a few of the beds that I tried to apply texture sets to.
