Lots of people wear them, rather randomly. Some drop them, rather randomly. Some are in chests/drawers, randomly. I don't know of any sure location, sorry. Find some non-named pc wearing one and sneak kill him? heh

I have seen this trick mentioned different places. Here is one description of the process.

"This is strange but it works 100 percent with Cass and Veronica. Get a Legion recruit Helmet, Ballcap and glasses(the ones that are together) and then sunglasses.

Put the legion recruit helmet and ballcap w/glasses in their inventory, then back out until they are wearing the recruit helmet. Then go back itno their inventory and take out the recruit helmet and slip in the sunglasses. Exit.

They will now be hatless with sunglasses. IMHO, they both look so completely better. I do this everytime. Sometimes when you zone you have to re-put the recruit helmet, but its like once or twice every few hours. Its worth it."

Neat trick I'll try it later, I wonder how long before someone asks how to get that purdy outfit with the low buttons off...

Damn not long it seems.

Ball cap and glasses, Powder gangers also commonly wear them, head back to goodsprings area, and wait a few days untill you get one.

Just found it. There was a dude at the trading outpost wearing it. For those looking to do the same thing, be sure to take the dude out in his sleep unless you want to piss off the NCR.

If your on the PC all you need to do is get the "Cass outfit playable" mod then you can just take them out of her inventory as normal. ;)

You don't need a mod. Just bring up the console, click on cass and type "removeitem 0015ef8b 1". For Veronica's hood change the item code to 0016a26f

Really? I mean that's a cool trick, but every time I give Cass a combat helmet she puts it right on and her hat goes to her inventory. (PS3)

I think its kinda interesting why the devs allow you to remove and replace the armor/clothing and hats of characters like boone with no limitations, but not characters like Cass and Veronica. Anyone know if there is a reason they did it in this manner or have any theories about why? I'm not whinning, I'm just a very curious person.

I only have boone, cass, and veronica as follows right now, but is it along gender lines? ie. male companions you have no limitations, while female companions you do? Thats the only theory I have, that or a different employee's created each of the companions which lead to inconsistencies in how you can customize them. What do you guys think?

Honestly, I think it's because Boone's beret has a nearly unique benefit to it that the player might find useful, while Cass' Hat and Veronica's Hood have generic or no benefit at all.

So, they made Boone's hat removable, but added dialogue for him to complain about it. The rest of his outfit, and every other Companion piece of gear is unplayable and restricted to the Companion it was intended for.

But I have two of boone's hat. One I wear and one that he's wearing. Is that a glitch then?

If you give cass the remnant power helmet, she will put it on and take off her cowboy hat.

Actually, Boone is a "paper doll" in regards to outfit, because his original grunt clothing is not invisible/is removable from his inventory. So you can dress him in ANYTHING (except non-NCR faction armor).....until you do his quest and he's given the usual "invisible" upgraded outfit. (edit:which I find annoying if I want to leave him in leather armor or something, so I put off his quest now)

But I have two of boone's hat. One I wear and one that he's wearing. Is that a glitch then?

No. The 2nd one is like a reward for finishing his quest/taking him as a companion or some such.

I've managed to get Cass' hat off, but not in the way described here. Though I have found a ballcap + glasses, I just can't make the necessary kill ...

Instead, I've dressed Cass up in combat armour and matching helmet. She looks just lovely. A bit like an extra from Aliens. Also, I've found her best weapon ever - but that is one for the Cheat, Hints & Spoilers section, surely. :)

Another way to get both Veronica and Cass headgear removed is by setting a White Glove Society Mask in their inventory, it does not count as "face wear" (Sunglasses, goggles, etc.) but they do look strange to say the most.

It is easy to get them to swap hats, but to have them go around hatless is the trick. As long as you give them something that has a higher DT than what they are wearing, they will put it on. But, if they have nothing, then it will be their stock clothing.

No, you receive a Beret as part of a quest with Boone, no glitch.

i killed a Jackal member outside Red Rock canyon in that little wasted small town to the south in the big field, and she had the same hat on. Came back later at level 30 and it was all Deathclaws and Cazadores though. :)
