Giant & Mammoth glitch?

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 12:16 am

So I've been watching a bit of gameplay and I noticed that whenever someone is walking though the land and comes near a giant or mammoth, they suddenly turn into hostiles and attack the character. Todd said that they were neutral AI's unless engaged in battle. Can anyone explain why they're randomly attacking?

I believe they attack if they feel they themselves or their herds are threatened. So while they won't attack on sight, if you get too close to them they will turn on you. At least that is how I understand it.

The mammoths are the giant's herd - they're like giant itinerant farmers. And they'll protect their flock

In the original gameplay videos Todd walked right up to the mammoth and it didn't attack him until he hit it.
Do you think they have just changed this feature, or had it solely like this for the footage?

You've misread my post. I said when you're just passing by them. The gameplay that I've been watching shows the character walking right passed them and then the mammoths and giants engage in battle.

I hope they didn't do that. I would be fairly disappointed with that. I hope it's just a bug or something like that, that'll get fixed with the day 1 patch.

Good point. Perhaps some giants are more lenient than others?

Maybe the player had a bad reputation with the giants from attacking them previously so they saw him as aggressive?

Confirming they turn hostile if you get too close.

Did you ever consider that there might be different kinds of AI for giants? Some might be hostile towards the player while others are not.

There was one video where the guy ran up to a giant and it was friendly for about 15 seconds until he tried killing it, then the giant killed him with one hit

I remember the demo video of the player walking up cloe to the giants without getting attacked until he attacked.
Maybe it was a change or maybe there are indeed different AI behaviors depending on which area you are in, which tribe etc..

Even if it was a change across the board, is it really such a dreadful change to warrant cries of " I WANT AN EXPLANATION!!!"

Maybe i'm overly sensitive nowadays.

If I'm not mistaken in the video Todd says that not all NPC's will be aggressive to you until you attack first. Maybe the ones your running up against are aggressive instead of passive like other NPC?

Yeah, I think pretty much you might have a reputation from the giants(i.e you've killed giants before, so they don't like you, maybe?) or the only other thing that would make sense is just that the giants are individually different, and some may or may not attack you on sight. I don't think that Todd Howard or Bethesda is so cheap they'd put in a feature just for a video demo, and also claim that they don't attack you as well.

From my experience: They don't turn hostile.... unless weapon drawn and walking into them.
Spoiler
However don't enter giant settlements, there is one pretty close to Riverwood and on low levels you can kiss your life goodbye, since they almost immediately turn hostile. Read: low level means one hit kill
