A global chat immersion breaking?

Post » Fri May 31, 2013 9:35 am

I recently watched some of the recent first person game play and i am getting really excited for this game now! The immersion of elder scrolls seems to be spot on and i think this might actually be done right, and dare i say it.. beyond my expectations. But after watching the video and listening to some IGN guys just talk about their experience with the game, a thought crossed my mind. If I am wondering around 2 hours deep into a really good quest with friends in a dungeon, the idea of knowing that there is a random general or global chat running away in the background just breaks all that immersion. This is an MMO and community communication is a great thing. I just would like to see a thoughtful approach to communication maybe within a radius of your character and large hubs of chat near collective places like cities or any other place people would choose to gather. What do you think?

It's an MMO, I fully expect (and want) a version of global chat, clan chat, local chat, and party chat.

Well, it's an MMO. What you want is another offline Elder Scrolls. Best I can say is turn off the chat so you feel alone. I do it all the time in WoW when the trade and general morons get on my nerves.

Hopefully they don't have a crazy limit on global chat, nothing is worse than games that require real money/super high level in order to be able to use it...

Agree. Maybe not super limited but within caves and dungeons i'd just like to see it disappear to give more of a feeling of dread and to give me motivation to want to get back to the outside. Be kinda fun i'd think.

Honestly..... the thought that a global chat is ruining your immersion? People are taking this "immersion" so far. Turn off your chat, shrink the window and get over yourself. It will likely be there because it is an online game. Cutting out options for those that want it is terrible. I personally love TES games and I love MMORPG's I really want scrolling combat text because I know where numbers are coming from and in games that don't have it, things get sneaky in the developer room. Have default option to keep it off but let me turn it on, have a default option to keep chat on but let you turn it off.

If you want true immersion, pick up a sword and go kill some damn wildlife. Stop trying to live real life in a video game, it is a game and it is meant for entertainment. Turn off the UI, play with hands in front of your face and stop trying to limit other people's options just because you think because it is there it is "immersion breaking". Everything is immersion breaking now with the way people bring it up in every single thread, it is completely ridiculous.

Most mmos you can just turn global chat off, then leave on /say which usally will have a radius that you can see people talk using /say. I normally turn global off my self because the chats can get down right ridiculous, just leave guild and party and local on.

I like to chat.. don't want to have to pay extra for it.

I don't think it breaks immersion. I treat chat just like any other piece of the gui. Its there to manipulate the world environment.

You are a lord among insects!

Welcome to the forums. Global chat will be in and yes I will be turning it off. But that's just me personally. ;)

Global chat is pure [censored] and no game should have it. There's nothing worse then watching a few idiots blabber on about something dumb, or create drama wile flooding the chat making is useless for messages like sales and people asking for help.

There's nothing more imersion breaking then global chat. Watching people get into a poltical debate really takes you out of the game.

There is no reason or advantage for a global chat to exist. If you want to talk to your guild, you have a chat for that already! If you want to talk to your friends, you have a chat for that already! If you want to talk to your strangers, you have local chat for that already! If you want to talk to sell something, you have a market for that already! If you need help in a dungeon or with a mob, you should have friends and a guild you anti-social recluse! Your friends aren't on? Then a help request board would fuction much better.

Global chat has thousands of players talking at once, so trying to respond to a single thing is rediculess, as you have to fight against all the inane [censored]ING.

Could you imagine if global chat existed in real life? Do you want that? Yeah, so why do you want it in a game?

Turn it off then? Really is it that hard for people to do something as simple as that. Stop complaining about immersion. I'm really getting tired of hearing this dribble. Everything in the world seems to be immersion breaking for someone. Again if you don't like it you can turn off chat.

Not that hard to also leave global chat either and not have to deal with it if you don't like it

I don't think he does.

Personally I'm not sure how I feel about this question, I suppose you could just turn it off as some have said.

I turn it off in every game I can. That doesn't answer the question: What good does it bring to the game to even have it?

So people can actually communicate with each other? Like what else is it there for? Sure you get asshats that [censored] there and spam the hell out of it. /ignore those people and the global chat can be great. I'm not sure how deft you are in your MMOs but the infamous Barren chats is a great example of the global chat. The most random things ever would be talked in that chat and I was had a great time while I was leveling in Barren. If you don't see the good that comes from it, then I don't understand. It's there to socialize, it's there for you to find people to play with. If you aren't willing to talk to the world how will you meet new people?

Watching people get trolled/flamed/upset in global chat is THE best thing about leveling. Those were the days, back when barrens chat was barrens chat.

Its where I lost my chuck Norris virginity.

I am finding myself hard pressed to actually see the point of a global chat these days however. Help channel I get, but global chat seems pointless to me. Can anyone think of a time when you might actually need a global chat?

I totally agree. I am a "roleplayer", I play for escapism, not for competition. But still I agree - not wanting a global chat goes too far.

When you feel really frustrated it's nice to get up in a heated conversation about nothing with someone on the other side of the globe so that the whole world can see.

You can also make Chuck Norris jokes.

Safe to say, the global chat is a thing for the entire family to enjoy :)

But no, a regional chat would suffice for me.
