BC Goes to the Movies

Post » Fri Sep 14, 2012 2:11 pm

All right, someone explain to me why CD doesn't have a movies thread.

This is to remedy that. Talk about what movies you've watched recently, what you're watching now, what you're hyped to watch in the future ...!

It's just a little old, but I finally watched Prometheus today and thought it was really good. Up there with Alien, almost. Plenty creepy, maybe slightly non-sensical and open-ended in some regards, also a bit cliched in others, but still ... a meaty sci-fi experience. There's quite a bit to unpack there, just as there was with Alien, so I'm going to get it when it's out on Blu-Ray. I like the whole evil [censored] crusade Charlize Theron is on! (Her Snow White movie is way better than Julia Roberts'.)

Also watched The Cabin in the Woods a few weeks ago and thought it was almost brilliant. It could have done with some script finessing and slightly better editing and directing, but overall it was a really good summer blockbuster. The best one I've watched in years, I'd say, actually, because it was (ugh) fresh.

What a pity.. That movie was (ugh) bad. Just as bad as Avengers (I'm serious- The Avengers was one of the worst movies I personally have seen, yet it was so critically acclaimed. I was baffled at how bad it was, I may have went in expecting too much, but who knows). My favorite movies I seen this summer was The Dark Knight Rises and Prometheus. They were both great.

Hmm, this is a tough one. I can't remember the last movie I saw in a theater. It was something kid friendly.

Caught The Chronicles of Ridike again; always liked that one. Just a good ol' action flick. The only other one I can think of is Phineas and Ferb in the 2nd Dimension. It wasn't too bad!

One I'm looking for is Hyperion, the Dan Simmons book coming to film. Special effects should be up there now to do it justice.

I hated The Avengers, too. Couldn't even make it half an hour into the movie. I literally fell asleep. Friends woke me up and we walked out of the theatre ...

The Cabin in the Woods was really enjoyable, though. :)

There used to be one but it ended in a tragedy...
~

Watched Parents Sunday... Cannibal parents trying to raise a kid.

Plan on watching Dredd and Looper because what else is there to watch

To watch them in a cheap regular theater or the better Drafthouse... Hibiscus Iced Tea and a Raging Bull pizza sounds pretty good while watching Dredd.

~
Saw Prometheus at the Drafthouse on Slaughter the week they opened up.
Total Recall was the last movie I saw at the regular cheap theaters.

I wish I had money and time to go the http://fantasticfest.com/if it hasn't happened yet.... Looks to happen in 6 days.

I also enjoyed Prometheus and Cabin in the Woods.

I recently saw The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. I thought it was a great movie.
The Raid: Redemption is a fantastic martial-arts/action movie.

I've been mostly watching documentaries lately, and African Cats, narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, was fantastic. The Last Lions, narrated by Jeremy Irons, also blew my mind. And you gotta check out Project Nim, if you haven't already.

Watched all three Oceans movies recently. I thought they were great. Didn't like 13 as much as the other two though.

It's just good light entertainment you forget about in a few days, nothing deep or memorable.

I rarely see movies in the theater anymore so I'm always behind. Just sayin'.

Most recently:
-- Battleship. Ha. Ha. Ha.
-- Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. That kid was annoying. Yes I know he's supposed to be a bit Asperger's or something. Still unlikable most of the time, making the movie rather unlikable. But Max von Sydow was awesome.
-- Hunger Games. Better than Twilight, but not by much. Didn't hit me emotionally or suspense wise at all so it was mostly a big snooze.

Waiting for Avengers and Prometheus to appear on pay per view. Don't have big expectations.
Side note: When I hear "Avengers" the first thing that still comes to my mind is that horrible movie with Ralph Fiendes, Uma Thurman, and Sean Connery

What's fun about Avengers is seeing all those characters together, and seeing how they interact with each other. And it's only fun if you've seen all the prequels: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America. That way you have an idea of who each character is. Otherwise it's like watching the season finale of the final season of a show you haven't watched a single episode of until then.

Also, its not trying to be some sort of mind bending deep intense thriller, it's an action movie with lots of special effects and explosions. A lot of people seem to be going in to the theatre expecting Schindlers List 2.

Me too. I had a hard time getting through the movie and kept finding other things to do while it was on.

The other movie I just saw was "The Help". Was surprisingly a fantastic movie.

In theaters I recently saw "The Avengers" and "The Dark Knight Rises" both of which I loved.

I haven't been keeping up on what's coming out soon or not but I saw this trailer for "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWnAqFyaQ5s" that looks pretty good. I also for some reason want to see "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqxmhJU4nk4" when it comes out. I oddly still remember reading it in school over all the others books.

Yeah, people expect it to be like the Dark Knight Rises but its just a action movie.

I've seen all the previous Avengers films and know they're just action/hero movies. Iron Man was the only one I really liked, altho Thor was at least lightly amusingly entertaining. Captain America put me to sleep, felt like he had no personality whatsoever. So I'll watch Avengers because I've seen the rest, but at this point I'm a bit tired of the whole comicnovel superhero business. I want a period of Die Hard or Speed like action movies again....then we can go back to magical superpower Superheroes for a while.

I recently saw The Dark Night Rises. I'd say it was cool, real dark mood and all, but I can't stomach that Batman. He sounds like he's taking a dump while breathing in sawdust, it's horrible.
And how come his voice changes so greatly when he dons the mask? There isn't anything obstructing his mouth.

I actually liked the avengers. It was better then i thought it was gonna be. I never saw iron man 2 or thor cus i wasnt really interested in them and the only reason i went to see the avengers is cus a friend asked me if i wanted to go and i blew him off the last few times.
So when i did go see avengers i thought i was gonna svck and it was much better then i thought. I liked how none of the characters were really "main" characters. I also liked the 2 huge as battles with all the avengers together as a team, that was pretty cool. And for not being a big fan of Captain America, i thought he was really well done in the avengers and probably one of my favourite characters on the team.

I think the success behind the avengers was that they made all these movies for each characters backstory so when they did the avengers they werent obligated by some contract to give each actor a certain amount of screen time.

I think that was one of the biggest failings of the X men movies was that they had all these big name actors that needed/demanded a certain amount of screentime just cus they have a big name
That and also the terrible castings for almost every mutant. The only good castings were Wolverine(and he only really looked good for wolverine, he didnt act like a very good one), Professor X, Jean Grey(sort of) and Nightcrawler. They terribly ruined my favourite mutants like Rouge, Storm, Magneto (now the guy was a good actor, he just doesnt fit the part of badass powerful leader in looks), Gambit (he wasnt even in the movies, they gave Iceman his part pretty much) and Mystique(she had absolutely no personality in the movies). I guess cyclops was ok casting but you could get any normal white guy and hes a good cyclops, also im not a fan of cyclops so i dont care either way.

But seeing as they are rebooting all these movies like spiderman and stuff because their first ones svcked, I'd definitely like to see a reboot of the X men with an entire new cast and a story that fits with the original. It'd be nice to see an Xmen movie based around the 90's cartoon of The night of the Sentinels or the Time Fugitives with Bishop and Cable.
Out of all Marvel things they have X men are the coolest IMO and it would be nice for hardcoe x men fans to get an actual good movie without a bunch of bogus "big name actors" like haley barry (or however you spell her name). I'd rather they get nobodys that arent famous to play the part of the X men rather then some big name actor just because they're popular.

You haven't seen as many bad movies as I have, apparently. Avengers, while trite and shallow, isn't even a blip on my bad movie radar. It was pretty much exactly what I expected, so I enjoyed it.

My favorite movies I seen this summer was The Dark Knight Rises and Prometheus. They were both great.
I was actually a bit disappointed in both of those films. The Dark Knight Rises had a lot of squandered potential, IMO. They spent too little time on things that contributed to the story and WAY too much time on fluff...the entire inclusion of the Catwoman character, for example, was a totally unnecessary screen time vampire. Just my 2c.

Prometheus was beautiful to look at. Alien and Aliens are two of my all-time favorite sci-fi films, so that's all I'm going to say about that. I'm not happy with Ridley Scott right now.

I had (justifiably, IMO) high expectations for both of those films.

I don't watch too many new movies these days, I just think that Hollywood has been suffering from a severe lack of creativity. Too many remakes for my taste. Most movies I watch are older that ten years by now...aside from a few exceptions. Most anything from Clint Eastwood I'll still watch.

According to Netflix, the last movie I watched was Elvira Mistress of the Dark. :hehe:

I tend to watch more tv shows than anything. I just got finsihed watching Jericho a few days ago, how it escaped me while it was still on the air, I don't know. It's a shame it was cancelled, because I thought it was a pretty good series and presented it's content well.

The Dark Knight Rises was awesome.

I keep meaning to rent that, and I always forget. Anything with Emma Stone has at least a few sure laughs ...

I haven't been keeping up on what's coming out soon or not but I saw this trailer for "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWnAqFyaQ5s" that looks pretty good.

I haven't seen the trailer, but I hear the book's decent, so I've got it noted.

Prometheus was beautiful to look at. Alien and Aliens are two of my all-time favorite sci-fi films, so that's all I'm going to say about that. I'm not happy with Ridley Scott right now.

Hah. Well, look, it was a bit wobbly, but I think it had its genuinely good moments, which good moments outweighed the bad by a fair margin. Sure, when
Spoiler
Charlize Theron gets her comeuppance
I was like, Ah, come on, man, Ridley, what's with the tired trope? and there were a few other missteps, but overall it was a decent effort.

I don't like Aliens or Alien 3. Alien: Resurrection I can accept as a piece of popcorn, LCD entertainment, so I quite like it actually. We shall not speak of the AvP movies. :stare:

Speaking of Brad Dourif ... Prometheus and his upcoming role in Dishonored have reminded me of the copy of Child's Play I have lying around. I'll be falling asleep to the sweet, sweet sounds of Chucky's cheesy, creeptastic voice!
