Good RPG Games (Not Skyrim)

Post » Mon Aug 20, 2012 5:31 am

Whilst I loved Fallout 3 (which I have yet to give a proper playthrough), Fallout: New Vegas and the majority of games which Bethesda publish, I have grown tiresome of Skyrim because it just has such a distinct lack of any good storyline.

I'll 2nd Morrowind. I also have a soft spot in my heart for the story of KotOR.

Morrowind and KotOR...RPGs don't get much better.

I have already played Knights of the Old Republic. As for Witcher, I didn't enjoy the gameplay of that game. Morrowind was good, so I suppose I could play through that again. What about Oblivion? I like Skyrim's gameplay but it's lack of dialogue options and just rubbish characters and story make it difficult to keep playing through.

KOTOR was so good! Just a shame that KOTOR 2 isn't on Steam...

Storyline? No.

Guild quests? Hell yes.

Other good RPGs are Morrowind, Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines, the two Witcher games, and the two Dragon Age games.

Oblivion has a mediocre-at-best storyline. At least for the MQ. I would say other storylines (Thieves and Dark Brotherhood) are rather enjoyable.

Agreed. The main quests for Oblivion and Skyrim leave something to be desired, but I've enjoyed both games Thieves Guild questlines way more.

KotOR II is half the game its older brother was. Fun yes, and I wish it were on steam...but I've played 4 full games of KotOR, averaging about 32 hours per playthrough. I played KotOR II once and played for 13 hours maybe?

The characters in that game were so good. I tried being evil for one playthrough, but just couldn't bring myself to be mean to Carth or Bastila.

Dragon Age: Origins is still £35 for the Ultimate Edition on Xbox. Only around £20 on PC, but not sure if I could run it. I played through a bit of it, but never finished it. Dragon Age 2 was awesome, but I've played as each class at least twice. I could buy the DLC, as I only got the prince one for it, but I think I am done with that game just as I am with Skyrim.

Hahah, that's so funny. Like I mentioned, I played 4 times, and 3 times dark 1 time light, because I couldn't stand Carth and Bastila belongs on the Dark Side anyway. What a testament to the game!

Star Ocean: The Second Story is a good RPG that will take some time from you. It's not large as say Skyrim or FO3, but there's enough content there, plus side missions, to keep you entertained. Super Mario RPG: Legend of The Seven Stars is another good one, although it is quite short compared to Star Ocean. Warhammer might be up your alley since it's kind of like an RPG with increasing units and the like.

Don't get the Ultimate Edition. Doesn't that one give you all those crappy extra storylines? Witchhunt and Leliana's Song are lame, only Awakening is awesome.
Expansions like the Warden's Keep and that one with the Golem are great fun though.

When Bastila joined the Dark Side, I was actually a little upset. I made sure she returned to the Light Side before the end though. The characters were all really good though and everything felt rather "organic". When I was talking to people, it didn't feel static like it does in Skyrim where you can pretty much just click anything to get through the text quicker.

I played the Mario one. I don't like turn-based combat generally. I like more action RPG games that are real-time.

No, the Ultimate Edition merely gives you all the expansions and it is better value than buying Awakening and other DLC separately.

Have you tried Jade Empire? It's a Bioware original xbox game, it's only 800 msp. And there's Divinity 2 Dragon Knight Saga, Kingdoms of Amalur and Dragon's Dogma.

KOTOR2 is halfway decent. Problem is, there's a point in the game where the dev team rushed because of LucasArts demand for it to be out by christmas.

The Dev Team said that they'd release a free patch to restore all the content that they had to cut (approx. 25-50% of the game!) but LucasArts said no. There's a KOTOR2 Reconstruction mod out there, but I've yet to play it. Supposedly, however, it enhances KOTOR 2 to what it should have been.

Final irony? LucasArts made all the CUT CONTENT CANON! I love the series, but I honestly think that Mr. Lucas has been running the franchise into the ground now...

I purchased Divinity 2 on Onlive. Not too sure about it though...
