Post » Sat Jul 28, 2012 7:24 am

my grandpa wants to send me the 20gauge bolt action Mossberg http://picturearchive.gunauction.com/4853211022/9663762/7471c7f77a726b01f98fa2ee04b7dab3.jpg looks a little like this. Is this a good gun for a teenager? http://picturearchive.gunauction.com/4853211022/9663762/05e22c8eb8907c5c04918da857d1cd82.jpg http://picturearchive.gunauction.com/4853211022/9663762/6f92354dd733c5ecb53a431d0b686aec.jpg

Hahaha, guns being good for teenagers. Oh you so crazy. I don't even think they're good for advlts, but whatever. Guess people love bullets or something.

I don't know if a 14 year old should be allowed to own a shotgun, and I'm saying this as a reformed 14 year old myself.

Is owning a gun at 14 even legal? No, I believe that you need to be 18. Or maybe that's just to buy them.

Why wouldn't it be? If a teenager's being given a gun, it's probably best to start with something that's single-shot.

Maybe he's already had a BB gun ;).

I had a single-shot .22 rifle when I was 11 years old .

I've hunted with a 20 gauge around that age and it's not bad at all. If you (are you the teen we are talking about here?) have shot before, then it won't be much of a surprise. A 20 has very light recoil, and it is great for hunting rabbits, because the lower power means that it won't obliterate the meat.

Of course, before setting your hands on any gun, go to your local range and take a class on gun safety.

I remember being 14 and wanting a shotgun, and if I had pushed hard enough my mother may have even bought me one as she seems to like them and used to go to a gun range in her youth, apparently. Of course gun intimidated me a whole lot back then so nothing ever came of it.

If I were to get a shotgun now, however it would probably be a Remington 870 because why not?

.410 is as easy as it gets in shotguns, and is a great gun for young people. Light, very little recoil (so they won't develop a flinch), and just an all around fun gun.

Edit.

After a re-read it looks like you aren't buying. If you're wanting a gun, you should be able to handle a 20 gauge. Have you ever shot a gun though? It's not a good idea to just pick one up randomly one day.

I'm all for young people having guns, but I'd at least start with something smaller even if you've been through training courses. That is, unless you already have something smaller.

Yes, Mossberg makes a very good product. 20ga makes sense as well. Bolt action shotguns can be fun, but if you plan on shooting clays, hunting bird/squirrel/rabbit, then you may want to consider a pump action (Both Remmington and Mossberg both make very affordable and reliable models). Just make sure you've been taught how to safely handle what you get and use common sense.

I think he is too young to be using a gun at that age.

And a shotgun

I'm very familiar with this particular model, my gpa made me clean it for about 2 hours before he decided I was worthy. Edit: I can work the bolt pretty fast, almost as fast as with using a pump.

I was given a similar 20 gauge shotgun at roughly around the same age and it worked out perfectly. If it were a 12 gauge I'd possibly reconsider, but a 20 gauge doesn't have nearly as much kick to it.

Heck my younger brother (who is around your age now) has a 20 guage pump action himself.

Its a perfectly acceptable age. Hunter and gun safety training courses usually start around 12 years old in any case.
