GotY SecuROM issues

Post » Fri Jul 08, 2011 8:35 am

I have a legal Oblivion GotY (bought at Target tyvm) and I have installed it twice before a couple of years ago on my computer with no problems. Today I decided to reinstall the game but can't. When I put Disc 1 in the drive I can hear it spinning but nothing comes up. So if I try to manually launch the game installer, windows beeps at me (like it does when a major error occurs) and after some time a message saying "Please insert the original disc instead of a backup (4003)." appears and then gives me a link to SecuROM's webpage. I've restarted my computer numerous times, I've tried to re-install numerous times, and it's always the same issue. I've tried doing a Google search, but all the conversations I've run across have been from torrent/pirate sites trying to find illegal work arounds and I don't deal with that kind of mess. One other board I found mentioned a crack, but then again I don't believe in cracks. Is there something I can do, that is above board, to make my game work again? I'm running XP professional.

Is this an error thrown by antivirus software? Have you tried a clean booting your computer?

I will try this.

Tom - I know this to be a SecuROM and not anti-virus message b/c when DAII came out a significant number of people wrote on the Bioware boards about a very similar SecuROM message popping up when they tried to install due to conflicts with the DRM.

Okay. I saw a link to that removal tool, but I am not really familiar with this. I'll be curious to know if it works though.

Sometimes it does other times it is actually a hardware conflict between Securom and certain brands of DVD\CD drives -- In which case normally making an .iso copy of the disk onto your HDD and mounting it with an emulation program will usually work (kind of weird that doing that bypasses the securom protection that is supposedly to stop people from making copies but as with all DRM sometimes you have to resort to extreme measures to get your game working !)
